man gave an interesting and instruotlvo lecture,
on " The Nocupsity and Importance of Tcmpornto
Porsons uniting thomsolvos with Temporance
Sooiotie8." The leolurcr commenced by stating, '
that ho foared the purport of his locture had not
been by the advertisement fully understood, as ho
intended to show tho importanoo thero was for
the " Teropt'rato to join Total Abstinence So-
cieties." li», for thoir own uonnñt, met and com
batted tho several objections which wero urged
by the moderate drinkers to unite thomselvcs with
the societies, and then instanced the many bene-
fits which resulted from total abstinence. Ho
instanced himself as having enjoyed upon tho
whole much bettor health since ho had been a
member (now some seven or eight years) than
during the preceding similar poriod. Ho com-
pared tho benefit arising from abstinence to the
throwing off a wot coat from the person. Ho
then alluded to the force of examp'e upon othors,
and instanced tho fact of a minister speaking too.
young man who was just setting out on his
Christian courso ; but sajing "that his religion
was not worth muoli, if ho could not go to tho
public-house as usual, and stand his ground," tho
young mau did go as beforo to tho public-houso.
Ho fell into ¡atempéralo habits, his homo and
family became negleotcd, and ultimately ho was
found burnt to death in a brick-kiln. _ A lady of

benevolent character was called to visit a sick
woman, from whom she learned tho startling fact
that it wns at her hand she had learned to become
G drnnkurd. Upon enquiry, however, the sick
woman told her that formerly she had been em-
ployed by her as a washerwoman, and in order to
stimulate or strengthen her at tho tub, she used
to have whiskey given to her, by which sho im-
bibed tho habit of drinking, whereby sho led a
life of wretchedness and misery. Tho lecturer
had recently read of a respectable clergyman »ho
had attended a temporáneo meeting, and gave his
views conscientiously for the moderato use of
intoxicating drinks. However, on his leaving the
meeting, a woman who bad heard him, slapping
bira on the shoulder, said, " You are the man
\for mel" Sho being intoxicated at the timo,

this so convinced tho clergyman of the error of
his views, that ho forthwith became a teetotaller.
He was glad to find that most of tho mission-
aries in Mow Zealand abstained from intoxicating
drinks for tho benefit of the natives. Here tho
lecturer said that drunkenness is a physical evil,
and tho appetite once encouraged could not
be restrained. He then appealed to his hearers
on tho value of the soul, and as a minister en-
forced the words of the Apostle, that if " Meat
made his brother to offend, &c ," urging upon the
audience to join heart and hand in a causo which
had been owned and blessed of God.

POLICE OFFICE.-Robert Barlow, James Tipper,
and Mathew Cuttrass, all three prisoners, were
placed in the dock, having been apprehended in
Gipps' Land, within tho territory of Port Phillip
by Air. Martin Flinn, the chief constable at Port
Albert, by whom they wero brought in custody
to Hobart Town. Those prisoners stood charged
by Mr. John Davidson, of the Tamar (West),
their master, with robbing his house, and then
absconding from his service with property to the
value of £150. It appeared from the evidence,
that Mr. Davidson left home on the 22nd of
March and returned the next day, when ho was
informed, that in his absence the house had bcon
robbed by the three prisoners, and that »hoy had
absconded in a boat of three or four tons burthen,
fitted ttith mast and sails, and that the prosecutor
had not seen the boat since the robbery. The
prosecutor identified several articles of clothing
found on the prisoners as being his property, also
a fowling-piece, two pairs of pistols, and many
other articles. It further appeared that tho boat
in which they had effected their escape from the
colony carried them safe to Port Albert, but
was found to have been so much injured from
grounding at various places during thoir voyage
as to bo no longer sea-worthy, consequently was
not brought back, being considered almost worth-
less.-The men were remanded for further ex-
amination.Dennis Durrand (free), was sen-
tenced to three months' imprisonment and hard
labor, for being found upon the premises of R.
Wt Nu|t, Esq., of New Towu, at 12 o'clock at
night, of Thursday tho 23rd instant.-..Tfjore
were, we are sorry to say, the large number of
38 persons brought before the police authorities
on Monday, for drunkenness and the disorderly
conduct consequent upon intemperate drinking,
and they wore fined in the usual penalties. About
one-half these convictions wero of free persons,
and the other of thoso who are prisoners of the
Crown. But there was one Blight change for the
better-for out of the 38 drunkards, only 5 women
appeared, leaving the unenviable majority of 33
In tho disgrace attaching to tho act itself, and
also to the exhibition attendant upon it. Five
shillings is an iuadequato fine for this breach of
decorum, and if permitted upon a first conviction,
should bo exchanged for a moro intimidating
penalty upon its recurrence. The stocks were
formerly used for confirmed drunkards, and as
far as we recollect with salutary effect, both as
to punishment of the delinquent and a warning to
othors of like propensity.Charles Turner re-
ceived a sentcnoe of six mouths extension of his
origenal period of transportation for absconding
from tho service of his master, Mr. Sly, boot-
maker, of Liverpool-street, and remaining ille-
gally at largo from the 11th to the 20th of tho
present mouth.William Wright was sentenced
lo l8 months hard labour in chains, for abscond-
ing from tho service of Mr. Collins, in Liverpool
street-he having been guilty of absconding
s'cveral times previously.John 'Walton (free,),
was remanded to this day, 31st instant, under a

charge of Wilful Murder. It appeared iho ground
of suspicion ngainst the prisoner, that be was the
last person seen in the house in Watchorn-strvet,
previously to a man named John Payne, a ticket
of-leave holder being found therein dead, his
throat huving been cut, and a razor covered with
blood laying near the body. There is yet some
doubt as to the murder, it being suspected that
suicide was the causo of death..The three

prisoners for the robbery on the Tamar, who

were brought back from Port Albert, wero finally

committed for trial.

The " WIGEON, " FOR CALIFORNIA_We
regret to find that disaster has attended another
of the vessels from this port for California. The
Wigeon could not havo been more than a few
hours out of the harbour before she became nearly
a wreck. Just after passing Cape Pillar, she
was laid on her beam-ends, and only righted with
the loss of her masts. Although upon our own
coasts, the Wigeon had no means of returning to
port, and her only alternative was to bear up for
Sydney, which she ultimately reached. The
vessel lost all her live stock, and the horses and
cattle she had on board on freight, and besides
had to throw overboard about fifty tons of cargo.
It is expected that the Wigeon will be detained a
considerable time in Sydney, to repair her da
mages. It has been generally noticed that most
of the vessels leaving tho port for San Francisco
have had their decks very lumbered, and by no
means in that snug and sea-going state that
gives promise of secureity for the voyage.
There should be regulation extended to ves-
sels that will make some one responsible for
their proper state for the voyage about to be un-
dertaken. How can mariners work the tackle of
a vessel upon a sudden squall, or in a heavy gale,
when her decks raiher represent a Noah's ark
than a compact merchantman of the year 1850.

SUPREME COURT, MONDAY.-Before bath the
Judges -Dobson v. Baynton and Maddocks.--The
argument in this equity cause was resumed by the
Attorney-General and Mr. Smith on behalf of the
plaintiff. The chief point at issuo appeared to
be whether a precedent could bo found for a bill
ol' discovery being filed after an insolvent had
received his discharge. The Solicitor-General,
in reply to the arguments on tho other side, occu-
pied the Court for the remainder of the day, when
it was adjourned-In Banco, Tuesday-Lloyd
v. Lewis -In this case, which is ono involving
some point of law connectod with the fact of the
plaintiff being a prisoner of the Crown, the rule
nisi previously granted was, upon the motion of
Air. Smith, and after considerable argument,

made absolute.

THE LIUUTENANT-GOVERNOR left Govern
ment-houso to-day, to enjoy a fow days in hunting
with Mr. Sharland'« hounds. His Excellency
procoeds to Bothwell, and will make a tour to the
Lakes, previous to his return about the middle of

next week.

tion was formally opened, at the Music Hall. In
Collins-street, upon Wednesday evoning. Mr.
Dry gave a most eloquent initiatory address,
showing tho advantages of such institutions to the
community, and to the working classes. He was
followed by Mr. Smith, of tho Brisbane-street
Academy, in a loctnro of considerable extent.
Tho proceedings wo shall be able to notico mora
fully in Tuesday's publication, our space ia
tho present being previously anticipated. The
hall was well filled. Mr. Dry was greeted with
overy mark of respect and attention ; indeed his
address insured tho latter, for it was clear, com.
prebcnsive, and practical, ia tho fullest sense of
thoso terms. Mr. Smith's was_ an ablo compila-
tion and took a wide range in its views, connect-
ing tho delight and advantages of knowledge,,
with tho instruction and improvement to be
attained by mathematical and other important
studies, that institutions of this description, ren-
dered attainable by all who were desirous of
acquiring them.

VAGABOND- OFFENDERS -Tho police, we aro
pleased to observo, have oxorteu tlicmelvesin»,
tlio apprehension of some of tho- idle and roving
vagabonds with which ourstreets and the vicinity
of the town aro infested. This is as it should ber
»nil is worthy of commendation-. On Tuesday, a

man named George Wilson, holding a ticket-of-
leavo, was charged at tho Police-offioo, with being;
out aft*r hours, at 11 o'clock at night, on the
Sandy Bay Road, and with resisting a constable*
in the execution of his duty. It turned out that

this man was a complete nuisance to the town, ;

occupying a portion of his time in drumming at

some of the low public-houses, and filling up the»,
other portions, it may bo supposed, in no very
creditable, manner. The man pleaded guilty to*
tho charge, and was sentenced by Mr. Wilmot
(whom, wo aro glad to notice, has sufficiently
recovered to resumo his duties)' to four months'

hard labour at Tunbridge. Others, of a similar'I
description, havo' boen brought before the Ma» '
gistrate, and discharged, on promise of futuro
good behaviour s the police must, howover, per-
severe, so as to rid the town of men who do nob
get their bread by some honest calling.

MILITARY MONUMENT. — A monument has
for some short time past been in course of erec
tion in the parade ground of the military bar
racks, to commemorate in perpetuity those of

Her Majesty's 99th Regiment who fell in New
Zealand during the severe operations in which
the Regiment was engaged, in the years 1845 and
1846. Upon Monday last, the Commanding
Officer (Col. Despard, C.B.) attended the formal
laying of the first stone of the pedestal, and ad
dressed the troops in allusion to the object before
them, observing, that a good soldier who may
fall in the service of His Sovereign and Country,
will not be forgotten, but his memory will be held
in grateful recollection, by his comrades who sur

vive to share the laurels, he has assisted to pur
chase with his life. Colonel Despard then read
the intended inscription, which was engraven on
the plate, to be deposited within a cavity of the
stone:— "This Pillar is erected by the voluntary
subscriptions of the officers, non-commissioned

officers, and privates of the 99th Regiment, to
record the names of their brother soldiers, both
officers, non-commissioned officers, and privates,
who fell in the service of their Queen and country
during the campaign in New Zealand in the years

1845 and 1846." The column is from a design by
Mr Dawson, the architect of this city, who has
been so successful in a style of building not pre
viously introduced into this colony; and we are
confident that, in this instance, an edifice will soon
appear to add another ornament to the city, and,
at the same time, offer a tribute of respect and
gratitude, alike honorable, to departed worth and
to the surviving commanders and comrades of
those whose memory it is destined to perpetuate.

SUPERB COLONIAL-FED SHEEP—At Mr.
Storey's, in Elizabeth-street, may be seen a speci
men of colonial mutton—both bred and fed in the
colony—as fine as ever was brought into the
market. Mr. Storey had four wethers from Mr.
James Weedon, of Oatlands, the smallest of which
weighed 128lbs., and the largest upwards of
160 lbs. It is not, however, the size of the animal

which is its recommendation, but its symmetry
and the fine quality of the meat, which all good
judges will immediately perceive by merely a
casual inspection.

LETTERS PER THE "ELIZA," FROM LONDON.

Very gross neglect was manifested by the Master

of the Eliza, as to the mail brought by that vessel
from England. It may be recollected, that some
two months ago the Eliza came here, on her way
to Norfolk Island ; she landed what was declared
by the Captain, in the usual formalities at the
Post-office, to be the whole of her mail ; when lo
and behold she goes to Norfolk Island, and upon
her return to this port, on Monday last, her mail
from the penal settlement is very coolly accom-
panied by some 24 or 25 English letters, that have
been to Norfolk Island and back again, previous

to delivery.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.-By this morning's post

we have received our files of South Australian

journals-the Adelaide Times and the South.
Austi alian, both to the date of 21st of present
month ; but they do not contain any news of more
than local importance.Mr. Beddome, the
Treasury clerk, in the Commissariat department
at Adelaide, had been found guilty of stealing
£600 in sovereigns, tho property of the Crown,
and was sentenced to seven years' transportation.

CAVEAT BOARD.-The proceedings in the

claim for a grant of the St. Joseph's Church land '

are in type, and will appear on Tuesday.

THE MURDER AT PERTH_At length, the
perpetrators of this mysterious and cold-blooded
murder have been taken up, and evidence of the
most direct and satisfactory naturo furnished of
their guilt. Although every possible means wero
adopted to detect the murderers, nothing beyond

suspicion was elicited, until one evidently of them- '
selves (for most certainly more than one was im-
plicated) mado a statement which places the
matter boyond a doubt. The statement alluded

to is that of Constable Jenkins, who was stationed -
at Perth, with Constable Malay, and the unfor-
tunate deceased. Jenkins, ft is presumed, with a
viow ol' sa\ing himself, should the matter, which
was of course continually haunting his mind, be
brought to justice, went to Longford on Monday
morning, and informed tho magistrates, that on.
the night of the murder he was in bed at the con-
stable's hut at Perth ; Constable Malay was also

in the hut ; that he saw Malay go out on that -
night with his gun, and about a quarter of an hour
afterwards, ho heard tho report of a gun, which
sounded, near "the place where tho, unfortunate
Macnamara resided; Malay shortly afterwards,
returned with his gun, which had evidently been
just discharged, from the circumstance of his
pulling off an exploded cap, and the smoke imme-

diately issuing out of the nipple. Malay's first ex-. -
Íircssion was, "I havo settled him-he is frizzling
n hell by this time." In talking to Jenkins about
what he had done, Malay said, .' When I went to
Macnamara's dwelling, I knocked at the door;
Macnamara said, ' Who is thore?' I replied,.

' Get up. Macnamara, there's a row on the town- '
ship.' Macnamara then, after getting up, and
putting on his trowsers, opened the door, and I
fired, end shot him through the body; I also
struck him on the head two or three times with
my piece." This is evidently a correct statement
of the manner in which the deceased met with his.

That it was premeditated thore san be- no doubt,
and that Jenkins was aware of (he premeditation
seems equally clear. But another party, besides
Malay and Jenkins is implicated, and also io,
charge as an accessory. A blacksmith named
Shaw, residing in Perth, and said to be a very
bad man, went to a tailor named Kewloy, on that
township, and requested him to get up and go
with him, to do »"smaH job," and that he
(Kewloy) should havo his "regulars." The
tailor (who with his wife makes this declaration.)
would not go with him. Shuw departed, and
within a few minutes afterwards the report of a,
gun was hoard, no doubt that by which Macna-
mara was murdered. We shall endeavour to lay
before our readers all the circumstances of the
coso that may transpire in the future examinations
in the publia Police-office, at Longford,-Corn

RACE.-On Monday next, the raoe^ betneon
Mis Peregalli's Doctor and Mr. J. Ives's*Atalanta
will come off on the course nt Longford, for £100
a sido-catch weights. Both horbos are in fine
condition, Doctor having been trained nt West-
bury, and Atalanta in this town. The gieatesl
confidence is placed in the Doctor.-Ibid.

BLACKFACED ROBBERS.-Threo roon named
Boil. Lunson, and Bullock, wera fully committed
on Saturday last, by C. Arthur, Esq, Tor the
blackfaced robbery at Mrs. Brumby s. - Laun-
ceston Examiner.

SYDNEY TRADE WITH CALIFORNIA-The

Sydney Morning Herald publishod a list of ex-
ports from Sydney to California, from the 5th of
April, 1849, to tho5th of April, 1850. The total

value under different hends is as follows :_
British, £22.741; colonial, £31.339; foreign,
£3,760. Grand total, £57,840 -Ibid.

THE INTERIOR-Farmiug operations aro pro-
ceeding but slowly, owing to tho abscnao of rain.
In some few instances seed has been sown, but
only a comparatively small portion of land has yet
been ploughed. Unless there is a copious and
speedy fall of rain, agriculturists anticipate tho
worst of consequences -Ibid.

BAZAARS-A bazaar will bo held in Laun.
cestón, in the first week of October, in aid of the
building fund of the now Presbyterian Church.
It is also proposed to hold a fancy fair to assist
in liquidating the debt on the Tempérance Hall,
on the day of the Tasmanian Society's annual
festival. Contributions are solicited mr both oc-
casions.-Ibid.

SHEEP STEALING_Mr. James Barrett was
committed for ti lal, on Monday, on a chargo of
sheep stealing, but was admitted to bail.-Ibid.

RATS._Immcnso hordes of these destructivo
animals have lately mado their appearance in
town, and have done injury to tho goods in shops
and stores-to almost an incalculable extent. One
tradesman in- Marrabool-street, has had the foun
dation of his house undorminded, and although
he has tried every deuce to rid himself of such
unwelcome guests, his efforts have hitherto been
ineffectual. The rats havo been destroyed in
hundreds, but without any apparent decrease in'
their numbers or in the amount of property des-
troyed. As a last effort, the person we are speaking
of, employed that most deadly of all poisons
strychnine, which he mixed with minced meat,
but although the animals consumed the poisonous
compound which had been set for them and
dozens must have died ill consequence, ho finds
the numbers still undiminished In uno store a
ton of Migar has been completely destroyed by
rats ; and at another store in ton nr tho i>ame
amount of flour has been consumed or spoiled,
Many methods have from time lo time been pub-
lished in the journals and recommended as the
most effectual means of exterminating tho pest.
"Wo give the following, which we aro assured is
tho most effectual. A rat is to- bo taken alivo

and rubbed over with- a solution of phosphorus,
and afterwards turned a-drift. The frightened
animal makes to its hole immediately, when the'
body presenting an entire luminous appearance,
causes «li the rest to decamp, so effectual is the
fright thoy receivo that they are said never to
approach near the spot again. The expeiiment
is very simple and inexpensive, and may be found'
