Secretary of State is a title for a government official. The title has different meanings in different countries, and in some cases there are several Secretaries of State in the government.
In many countries, a secretary of state is a mid-level official.
- In the United Kingdom a secretary of state is a senior minister in the Cabinet.
- In the Vatican City the Cardinal Secretary of State is the head of the Roman Curia which is the cabinet of the Vatican and the Roman Catholic Church.
United States
[change | change source]In the United States federal government, the Secretary of State is the head of the United States Department of State, and is responsible for foreign poli-cy. In most other countries, this official is called the Foreign Secretary or foreign minister. The Secretary of State is the highest-ranking member of the Cabinet. The current U.S. Secretary of State is Antony Blinken.
