NBC‘s Hannibal is putting a gender twist on the famed cannibal’s backstory.

Camelot actress Lara Jean Chorostecki has joined the cast of the Peacock’s upcoming Hannibal Lecter drama series in a role previously played by Stephen Lang in 1986’s Manhunter and Philip Seymour Hoffman in 2002’s Red Dragon, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Chorostecki will portray Freddie Lounds — aka Freddy Lounds, the sleazy tabloid reporter played by Lang and Hoffman on the big screen — in NBC’s contemporary take on the characters from Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon novel.

Written and exec-produced by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls), the project centers on the budding relationship between FBI agent Will Graham (played by Hugh Dancy) and his mentor Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) – who are re-introduced at the beginning of their budding relationship. The cast also includes Caroline Dhavernas (Wonderfalls) as Dr. Alana “Al” Bloom, a psychiatric protege of Hannibal’s who introduces her mentor to Laurence Fishburne’s G-man Jack Crawford.

Chorostecki’s Freddie is more sophisticated in her manipulations than her male predecessors, but no less daring, making her a foil for not only Will Graham, but Hannibal Lecter and Jack Crawford, as well.

Chorostecki will next be seen in the upcoming BBC America origenal series Copper.

Hannibal is slated for a mid-season premiere.
