'Armageddon' On Top

(7/9/98) - Soundtracks continue to rule the charts this week, according to SoundScan data, but hip-hop and R&B artists are also continuing to make impressive showings. The Armageddon soundtrack, fueled by Aerosmith's rock hit "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing," rockets to the top of the charts this week with sales of 183,700 copies. Making impressive debuts are El Niño by hip-hop outfit the Def Squad at No. 2 with sales of 152,600 and Embrya by superfly R&B crooner Maxwell, at No. 3 with sales of 149,200. Although Godzilla and Bulworth fall out of the top 10, sliding to No. 12 and No. 13, respectively, City Of Angels and Hope Floats are holding up well at No. 4 and No. 6. Breaking into the top 10 this week is the soundtrack from Dr. Dolittle
, which moves from No. 18 to No. 10. Rounding out the top 10 are Brandy's Never Say Never at No. 5, Master P's MP Da Last Don at No. 7, Will Smith's Big Willie Style at No. 8, and the Backstreet Boys at No. 9. Other notable debuts include the Artist Formerly Known As Prince's New Power Soul at No. 22 with sales of more than 47,000, and Rancid's Life Won't Wait at No. 35 with sales of more than 39,000 copies.
