Formerly called Western Samoa, Samoa has competed at the Olympic Games of 1984, and has not been absent since. The Pacific country has not yet competed at the Olympic Winter Games. Ele Opeloge, a 2008 weightlifter, came close to being Samoa’s first medallist when she missed the bronze medal in the women’s super-heavyweight by just one kilogram, but more than eight years later she became the first medalist for her country and this without competing in the 2016 Games. After two of the medalist of her event have been disqualified after the re-testing of their samples, Opeloge moved up to silver.
