Like Trials HD on Xbox Live, Kona's Crate is one of the few non-exercise games that makes me flex and work all my muscles. Not because it's physically demanding, but because it's just so damn stress-inducing at times that I can't help myself. I don't really like the look of it, but the simple, repetitive gameplay and fun levels are so addictive that I can't stop playing.

In Kona's Crate, your only job is to get a wooden crate to a stereotypical looking tribal chief. To this end, you're placed in control of a platform that carries the crate, using its jet boosters to launch it into the air. Touching each side of the screen activates the thrusters on the corresponding side, making every stage a delicate dance where you're balancing left and right thrusts in order to navigate obstacles and make sure the crate stays balanced on the platform. The stages get increasingly elaborate, and the speed you complete the course decides if you get one, two or a coveted three star rating. It's very similar to the classic Lunar Lander game, only you're timed, don't have to worry about fuel, and it has a bizarre tribal aesthetic.

It's all about finesse.

The reason Kona's Crate is so enjoyable is because it takes a lot of skill. Navigating even the most basic courses requires finesse. A delicate touch of the proper thrusters at just the right moment makes the difference between success and a brutal wreck. And getting three stars, a cliché in mobile game design at this point, still works to make me want to replay stages. After that sense of accomplishment I get from just managing to complete a hard stage without dropping the crate, it's all about figuring out how to do it like a speed demon. I know you're piloting a silly platform with a crate on top, but when I manage to do a speed run through a course I feel like a master lunar lander pilot.

Kona’s Crate is another example of an iOS game that takes a classic idea, puts a new skin on it and sells it to me with a bunch of fun new levels. Granted, this isn’t exactly the same thing as the old Lunar Lander, but it’s obviously inspired by it, and it’s a formula that’s still addictive today. Combine this with the timer, stars, and online leaderboards and you’ve got a combination that’s easy to swallow for just a few bucks.
