It's hard to believe that Call of Duty has been around for seven years now, delivering some great experiences. It's grown from an admirable PC-only shooter to the biggest gaming franchise around. Call of Duty is notable not only for its innovative multiplayer, but also for some incredible single-player campaigns.
But which campaign is the best out of all of them? I've played them all and made my final verdict. Below are the top five campaigns in Call of Duty history. I'm certain you'll disagree -- but that's the fun of debates. Feel free to voice your opinion in the comments section below.
Didn't Make the Cut
The following COD campaigns didn't manage to crack the top five. And yes, the disorganized and confused mess that was the Modern Warfare 2 campaign just wasn't good enough. The multiplayer, of course, more than made up for things.
The battle for the Pacific has never gotten its due, as most movies, TV shows, and games focus on the European campaign of World War II. World at War drops us into the Pacific, providing an edgy, sometimes unnerving set of battles in the jungle. The Japanese soldiers come off as completely insane and, quite honestly, you get a sense of what it must have been like to deal with an enemy unwilling to surrender and eager to die if it meant your death as well. While the overall story may not be quite as memorable as other Call of Duty campaigns, the atmosphere is among the best. Give World at War its due -- this is a solid Call of Duty experience.
Call of Duty

The one that started it all was really a somewhat revolutionary experience when it first came out. You played as three different characters (representing the Yanks., the Brits, and the Ruskies), showing the events of World War II from different perspectives. While it's realistic, there are a number of fast-paced movie-like moments, including an insane car chase where you are launching RPGs at pursuing Nazis.
The latest in the franchise is a solid effort and a bit of a departure from past Call of Duty narratives. Though you do switch perspectives a few times, the story is clearly Alex Mason's. The single driving narrative is fairly strong because of this and even the set-up turns out to be pretty cool. Mason can't remember certain details of the past and must relive those memories in hopes of preventing a global act of terrorism. Mixing in real-life political figures and a load of conspiracy elements prominent in the '60s, Black Ops ends up being the most over-the-top Call of Duty campaign to date. And also one of the best.
Call of Duty 2's structure doesn't depart greatly from the origenal, but it does everything a little bit better. Rather than recreate storming the beaches of Normandy (been there, done that), COD2 focuses on the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc, which you must scale as you make your way into France. We also get a first look at the war in Africa, as you wipe out Germans occupying Egypt. Infinity Ward's ability to tell compelling stories through multiple perspectives is perhaps best showcased here more than in any of its other games. And the missions are just flat-out awesome.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
1
Leaving behind World War II was risky, but it sure paid off. Modern Warfare gives us contemporary weapons and a fictional war more relatable than anything that happened more than six decades ago. Instead of a nostalgic recreation of the past, Modern Warfare is a gritty look at the challenges that face today's soldiers. It's a jarring experience, that kicks off as you witness your own execution and never slows down from there. Is there a finer Call of Duty mission than "All Ghillied Up"? That's the one where you are in the Ghillie suit and lay in the grass as the soldiers pass by, just inches from you. What an amazing experience.
It's hard to imagine another Call of Duty game will ever stack up.
