So we've been asked if we're participating, and here's the answer. It's been talked about, but the truth is we lack the ability to actually take part. That, and there's the risk of conflicting with the interests of our parent companies considering that IGN is owned by News Corp, and News Corp is a sponsor of the bill. Despite that I think I can speak unanimously for the VE crew in that we're equally as unhappy as you guys are with SOPA as is, and view it as the potential destruction of the internet as we know it. Hell, it'd probably even kill our ability to do our jobs, especially when it comes to hosting or even embedding media.
With that said, we will be covering game related news today. I've even got a giveaway planned, but I'll reserve that for a dedicated post just in case this one explodes with SOPA related comments. In the mean time, here's a little SNL clip for you guys featuring Jube's favorite wizard playing spin the bottle. Oh and if you missed it, here's a link to their dead on jab at Ricky Gervais just before the Golden Globes.
What once started as a Half-Life 2 mod will now be getting a full release on Steam come February 14th. This 'experimental first-person game' hits me like a moody modern Myst, your goal here is to explore and become engrossed in the story; a nice change of pace if you're getting worn out capping points and dying from unseen grenades. Check out the scenery below.
Kerrigan has been tweeting that she's been doing some voice recording for Heart of the Swarm. With voice work going on, HotS is closer now than it has been at any point in the past! When it is released, it will launch alongside the Blizzard Arcade, a portal featuring player made mods, and will eventually even let mod makers charge and earn some cash for their mods. As such, it will probably be a safe bet that the Blizzard created DotA mod will be one of the first available in the Blizzard Arcade.

Inspired by the supernatural horror comic book series created by Top Cow Productions, Inc., and developed by Digital Extremes, The Darkness II tells the next chapter in the story of Jackie Estacado, head of a New York crime family and wielder of the ancient force of chaos known as the Darkness. The demo of The Darkness II places gamers into the role of Jackie as he battles his way through hordes of enemies hell-bent on claiming the power of the Darkness for themselves. With this demo, gamers will get a taste of the violent power of the demonic abilities at Jackie’s disposal as he faces off against the ancient Brotherhood in the single-player campaign. The Darkness II is the sequel to the hit 2007 title, The Darkness, and brings a unique new combat mechanic throughQuad-Wielding™, which allows players to slash, grab and throw objects and enemies with two Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons. The game is layered with thematic elements of dark versus light, steeped in deep and twisted storytelling, and drenched in stylistic violence which is brought to life through the hand-painted graphic noir art style, true to its comic book origens.
Sucks on a number of levels. I'm taking my football and going home.
The recipient of multiple industry honors and accolades, including “Best PC Game” and “Best MMO” at last year’s E3 expo, TERA is a new breed of online game that combines all the depth of a traditional MMO with the visceral gratification of an action game. In TERA, players must actively aim, dodge and block, as the game’s real-time combat system takes into account player position and skill, not stats alone.Players begin by creating a character from seven races and eight classes as they join in an alliance to save the world from bloodthirsty armies of monsters who threaten to destroy the very gods who hold their world together. TERA also introduces a revolutionary political system in which players wield power in their province based on their in-game political prowess or player versus player combat skill.
More information on TERA beta events will be available in the coming weeks.
Update: Just a video. I am an idiot.
Elite Drop 1: Liberation Map
A militarized Central Park stretches across a vast landscape, ripe for long-range sniper and LMG fire. Mounted turrets on either end lend power to anyone brave enough to expose themselves in exchange for deadly firepower. Plan out your movement and always be aware of nearby sightlines to avoid becoming fodder for the enemy.
Elite Drop 2: Piazza Map
This seaside Italian getaway is anything but idyllic, as tight corners and branching pathways pose great risk at every turn. Close-range combat dominates, and the team that best utilizes flanking routes will most often come out on top. Attacks from behind, above and below are an ever-constant threat. Keep up your awareness and don’t get taken by surprise.
For those of you unfamiliar with the premise, Wargame focuses on a hypothetical conventional war between the Warsaw Pact and NATO during the Brezhnev era. Will the Fulda gap hold? Will Soviet airpower make the US regret canning the M247 Sergeant York self-propelled anti-aircraft weapon? How many T-80s can a British Chieftain knock out before exploding? I personally can’t wait to find out this February.
Anyone else up for some huge multiplayer battles when this one comes out?
- Bloodlines the PC game is a big inspiration to the MMO, they are trying to capture the same atmosphere/using it as a point of reference.
- He finds PnP RPG's natural to move into a MMO as it is about individual characters not a specific one (ie [sic] Spiderman).
- A lot of focus on player to player interactions due to lack of GM unlike a table top session.
- Confirms single shard concept from EVE will be used due to shared technology.
- Wanted to focus on vampires only to give depth due to focusing on only one playable supernatural on launch.
- Said on the surface the game will not seem to be about supernaturals but becomes evident when your character digs into the game world.
The setting seems like a great fit for an MMO, especially if it will be focusing on player vs Player intrigue rather than the usual fare. Unfortunately, its all set during night, so you can’t call up your buddy on the force and arrange a daytime S.W.A.T. team raid on your rival’s haven.
Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online, an MMO being developed by Vigil Games for THQ, may not ever see the light of day. According to this article on DigitalBattle.com, the MMO has been cancelled because of THQ’s financial problems.
The Article goes on to report on rumors of THQ's allegedly dire straights.
According to rumors which are flooding out of THQ, the company is in such a dire state that it might announce bankruptcy soon, or offer itself up for sale. More THQ games are reported to be on the chopping block, but it’s unclear which ones. Currently, the publisher is funding projects such as Darksiders 2 and Metro: Last Light.According to reports coming from game analyst Kevin Dent, THQ is now desperately looking for a buyer, and has not only cancelled all projects it had lined up for 2014, but has returned IP rights it acquired from Disney. With no refund.
However, as neverko pointed out, Eurogamer posted an article about how tall tales of THQ's problems were unfounded. In a statement given to VG247, THQ PR said that "THQ has not cancelled its 2014 line-up, and has not made any decisions regarding the planned MMO."
So, whether or not Dark Millennium Online will ever come out remains to be seen. We'll keep you posted.
But let’s put these disgusting animals (and our inevitable conflict) out of our minds for a moment, and discuss video games. It’s been a while since I’ve put the El Presidente hat on. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s probably been about a week. Anyway, I was intrigued by the announcement of the Modern Times expansion. Are there any Tropico fans in the house? If so, is there anything you’d particularly like to see in this expansion? Do you have questions, comments, or cries of anguish that you’d like to express to Kalypso?
