t=()In the first-person puzzle platformer Quantum Conundrum , players must use the unusual ability to shift dimensions to navigate the twisting corridors of Quadwrangle Manor. Players take on the role of a young kid dropped off on his uncle's doorstep for the weekend; his uncle just so happens to be the brilliant, eccentric inventor, Professor Fitz Quadwrangle. Upon entering the Professor's vast manor home retrofitted with crazy technology to test his latest hypotheses, players quickly realize their uncle has gone missing. Fortunately, players soon gain access to Professor Quadwrangle's latest invention, the Inter-Dimensional Shift Device, which, at the press of a button, will shift the world around them to an entirely new dimension. In order to find him, players must use the newly found IDS Device to dynamically change the world to and from a variety of different dimensions to progress through the complicated Quadwrangle Manor. While on the journey, becoming adept at utilizing the various dimensions will help them trek from one bizarre and challenging room to the next. It might sound easy enough, but it is a tall order for a kid in a giant puzzle of a manor!
Quantum Conundrum made my day during PAX last year. Literally. After Portal creator Kim Swift's brain-bending, gravity-defying demo, I couldn't stop smiling. For, like, a day. Honestly, it was sort of painful. And I think I frightened a few children. But I couldn't help it. The first-person puzzler sees you flip-flop between dimensions -- including reverse gravity, slow-mo, and, er, fluffy -- in an effort to rescue your mad scientist uncle from anooother dimension... that's, er, not one of those. Predictably, given the pedigree, it's also insanely clever and charming. Jump to the mysterious dimension after the break to watch an eight minute walkthrough of the game, courtesy of GameTrailers. Kim Swift's career trajectory is off the charts. In 2005, Swift and a team of senior game design students at DigiPen created the award-winning environmental puzzle game, Narbacular Drop. Not long after graduation, the entire Narbacular team was hired by Valve. It was at the Bellevue, Washington studio where Swift helped create a fun little puzzle game you may have heard of: Portal. At the end of 2009, Swift was lured away by Airtight Games and named a project lead. A year-and-a-half later, we know what Swift's next game will be: first-person puzzler Quantum Conundrum.
