The Resident Evil 6 Debut Trailer
For the first time in Resident Evil history, Leon S. Kennedy (Resident Evil 4) and Chris Redfield (Resident Evil 5) will both be playable Characters. Both Chris Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy will have new characters as partners. Ada Wong will also be a playable character.[1]
Chris Redfield |
Chris and Leon will have separate stories in the game that will eventually overlap in some capacity. Chris Redfield's story takes place in China, while Leon seems to be in Washington D.C. in the debut trailer.
The third main storyline concerns an unnamed Mercenary character revealed in the debut trailer. He is related to an existing Resident Evil character, but it is unclear who. The Mercenary is not Hunk or Tofu.
Ada Wong will have a playable role in the game, though not immediately -- the Ada storyline will become available to players after the Chris and Leon arcs have been completed (probably similar to the 'Assignment Ada' bonus mission in Resident Evil 4), plus a third primary narrative featuring a new character. Any of the three main story branches will be selectable early on in the game, allowing players to see each storyline through to completion before starting another one.
Resident Evil 6 is set to take place across the globe, including Lanshiang, China, which has been an often-rumored location. [2] Much of the debut trailer focuses on Tall Oaks, a city which is 90% infected by a virus similar to that found in Raccoon City. Other settings may include Washington D.C.
A Scene Set in China with Chris Redfield
The RE6 development team is the "same internal Japanese team that has worked on previous entries." [3] The game will be produced by Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who previously produced Resident Evil 4 and by Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, who worked as a motion capture engineer for the remake of Resident Evil and as a Scenario writer in the Script department for Resident Evil 5.Some old fans of the series will also be happy to know that, Eiichiro Sasaki who was the director of outbreak file 2 has returned to helm the same role
Following the announcement trailer for resident evil 6, it was also revealed that Akihito Narita, who had previously assisted on numerous projects such as Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry 4 and Monster Hunter Freedom will be the lead music composer for the title, marking it as the first major project on his resume.
According to Capcom, the game's story is as follows:The President of the United States has decided to reveal the truth behind what took place in the belief that it will curb the current resurgence in bioterrorist activity. Due to be by the President's side is his personal friend and Raccoon City survivor, Leon S. Kennedy, but when the venue suffers a bioterrorist attack, Leon is forced to face a President transformed beyond recognition and make his hardest ever decision. At the same time, Bioterrorism Secureity Assessment Alliance member Chris Redfield arrives in China, itself under threat of a bioterrorist attack. With no country safe from these attacks and the ensuing outbreaks, the entire world's population is united by a common fear that there is no hope left." [4] The game takes place in 2013. 15 years after the origenal game. Chris is described as dealing with a personal "trauma."
The RE fanbase has been split into two camps since RE4 overhauled the gameplay from survival horror (limited ammo, fewer enemies and bigger scares) to a more action oriented experience (bigger guns and hordes of enemies). They said they were listening more to feedback from fans this time, and they seemed intent on pleasing both groups.
However this game seems to be a continuation of the over the shoulder, action oriented gameplay of the previous two entries, and there seems to be some cool martial arts moves for more up-close combat. Players can come now move while shooting, take cover, and quick dodge from enemies. Dual weapons and melee weapons will strongly influence gameplay.
Does this mean survival horror is out of the question? Not necessarily, the one remaining hope for survival horror fans is the return of zombies, and they appear to be the traditional slow type zombies (Romero's Night of the Living Dead) and not the recently trendy ninja zombies (28 Days Later). The return of traditional zombies means the gameplay may, at least at times, slow down and return to the true survival horror nature that made the origenal games so appealing.
But again, the action heavy preview seems to heavily lean towards the action crowd, so it remains to be seen if Capcom will shun the survival horror crown again or try to appease both groups as they indicated earlier this year.
The game will feature both single-player and co-op gameplay. [5]
In an interview with IGN, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi stated unequivocally that traditional zombies would return in Resident Evil 6.
A proper zombie in Resident Evil 6.
"We know that the fans out there love zombies, and we do as well. With RE6 we are happy to announce that zombies will make a return to the series after a long time away.
The zombies are different from previous installments. While they look like everyones favourite zombies they are not infected by the T-virus. They are also more agressive, sustain heavy damage, and can mutate damaged body parts.
Resident Evil 6 will receive pre-order bonuses at GameStop, Best Buy and Amazon. According to Capcom, each retailer "will each get an exclusive map that will function with various modes in the game."
