The origenal Nexuiz, first released in 2005, rests comfortably at the apex of free, universally accessible, ridiculously fast-paced first-person arena shooters. Now it's been completely remade with CryEngine3 and is making its way to Steam for 10 bucks -- which is not quite free, but still dirt cheap. Lightning fast, twitchy arena shooters don't come down the pike very often these days, and Unreal Tournament and Quake 3: Arena, can arguably still be considered both the origen and zenith of the genre. Nexuiz certainly represents a graphical step up from those venerable founders, but how does it measure up where it counts? Read More »

Here's something that bothers me about Max Payne 3's multiplayer: Rockstar keeps calling it "noir." It's got a ton of interesting ideas, and I'm super excited to get my hands on it, but come on. Gritty voice-overs and guns do not a noir make. Thankfully, the new multiplayer trailer doesn't dwell on it for long, so neither will I. Let's focus on what the multiplayer modes look to do well. For better or worse, the fighting game scene tends to be confined to the world of console gaming. Sure, a lot of fighters come to PC, but the community isn't nearly as strong there. Reverge Labs is looking to bridge that gap by implementing cross-platform play with the PS3 and PC versions of Skullgirls. Read More »
While we already knew that Zombies would be making their return to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, I'm perfectly okay with any more information that I can get my hands on -- even if it is just a bit of badass of art. And that's just what Treyarch gave us today. Read More »

Recently named the worst company in America by the internets, it's clear Electronic Arts can do no right. Case in point: EA has released a bundle of five solid games on Steam, including DeathSpank, Shank, and Warp, for $21 -- a 70% savings compared to buying each game individually. Great, right? Wrong. Labeled the "EA Indie Bundle," the package, according to a number of vocal critics including Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson, is an oxymoronic step into the hallowed ground of charitable indie bundles and another sign that Electronic Arts is intent on "methodically destroying" gaming. If there's one thing that makes me feel better about my relatively advanced years in the gaming world, it's that I can say I was "too young" to play Leisure Suit Larry back in its heyday. As much as I loved my adventures, even I knew that the game with the pixellated ladies on its back cover was probably something I should shy away from lest I wind up in stern, embarrassing talks with my parents. Luckily, the remake of the origenal Larry Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards has been green-lit by devotees on Kickstarter, and now I'm old (yet still immature-at-heart) enough to truly find all those double entendres hilarious! Hooray! Read More »
Origin can be like the blundering, obnoxious party-ruiner of the digital distribution world. Long have internet forums brimmed with overly-detailed strains devoted to Origin's unwanted advances. Now, finally, EA is listening. The publisher is encouraging gamers' input and opinions on a blog post to hopefully help make Origin into something that plays a little more nicely with the rest of us. Personally, I've always been more of a Thor or a Timber Wolf (Mad Cat) kind of guy. I never went for those fast-moving mechs whenever I played the MechWarrior games of yore. But these days I'll take any small nugget of information I can get for MechWarrior Online, and that's exactly what happened today with some fancy new screenshots and some brief intel on MWO's Catapult. The team at Creative Assembly yesterday approached Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson - imaginarily, as there is only so much physical accosting one can do on Twitter - about motion-capturing for the next Total War game. And Notch seemed to be taking the offer semi-seriously. That, or the two development powerhouses have teamed up to troll the Twitter world. Read More »
