When I picked up the Batman LEGO game for my kid in the bargain bin last summer, he and I both very quickly became fans of the notion of our favorite superheroes (and super villains) getting transformed into cute little blocky construct-a-forms. More recently, LEGO also released actual -- non-pixel -- toy versions of the DC characters… but sadly, the Marvel equivalent was nowhere to be found. Until now.
With The Avengers overtaking the movie theaters of the world right now, the timing couldn't be better for LEGO to return to the world of Marvel with several Avengers related sets. Yes, some Spider-Man collections were released during the Sam Raimi era of movies, but now LEGO seems to be embracing the House of Ideas in full force.
Both of the sets covered here are inspired by -- if not exactly culled from -- the new movie.
First up is Captain America's Avenging Cycle, a 72-piece set that includes three figures -- two of Loki's alien soldiers, plus Cap himself. The First Avenger obviously comes with his motorcycle, which is not something we actually see in this film (though the character has certainly been known to tool around on one throughout his history). There's also a flying alien sled thingamajig, straight out of the movie, and an alien cannon. The sled and cannon can "launch" missiles at Cap, but worry not -- Steve Rogers has my favorite part of this set to protect him. His little shield, of course!
Next up is the more extensive Loki's Cosmic Cube Escape, which consists of 181 pieces, including three figures -- Iron Man, Hawkeye and the God of Mischief himself. This set comes from a very specific scene early in the film, though in the movie version Tony Stark is not involved in this particular bit of action. Hawkeye drives a S.H.I.E.L.D. truck here, and Loki can ride in the back of the vehicle -- as well as be launched out of it. The truck also has some missile action, but it's the finer details of these three figures that really sells the whole thing. Iron Man's mask opens up, and his boots and hands have a jet-exhaust effect, just like in the movies. Hawkeye has a bow and arrow (and shades!). And Loki has his spear/staff, his funky horned helmet and the Cosmic Cube! (This set also comes with a wordless mini-comic that my four-year-old loves.)
Both collections were easy enough to put together, but not too easy; I worked with my son on them and we finished both in a couple of hours. As usual, the LEGO blocks are great to work with -- durable and sturdy, and easily customizable (if you have enough of them). And the design is very nicely done. The Cap set is about 13 bucks, while Loki's Cosmic Cube Escape will run you a cool 20-spot.
Other Avengers sets include Hulk's Helicarrier Breakout (389 pieces) and Quinjet Aerial Battle (735 pieces!). (Man, that Hulk LEGO figure looks sweet.) And there are "Buildable Figures" of Iron Man, Hulk and Cap available that seem to be more in line with LEGO's Hero Factory variety. Also, LEGO is branching out into X-Men territory with a Wolverine set.
The bottom line is this is a no-brainer team-up -- LEGO and superheroes. They go together like Hulk and smash! LEGO has been deep into franchise sets for a while now with everything from Harry Potter to Star Wars, so it only makes sense to give the masses what they want with LEGO Avengers. And the masses will definitely want, and enjoy, these sets.
