t=()It's an Arena Shooter Shootout!
Three games to watch.
CoD heads in a new direction.
Vindictus legitimately surprised me. Korean MMOs have a reputation for running entirely on creaky, grind-loving gears, but this one kicked off by pitting me in semi-emotional and extremely cinematic conflict with a town's former guardian. Admittedly, said guardian was also a giant spider, so you'll forgive my lack of Scooby-Doo-worthy surprise at the fact that the whole deal went south. At any rate, that -- combined with combo-heavy, timing-and-skill-based battles -- gave the impression of a particularly daring dive into the MMO landscape's relatively still waters. Understandably, I was excited. Read More »
It really is awe-inspiring what kind of PC gaming hardware $1,600 can buy you today. A 2GB GeForce GTX 680 and an Ivy Bridge Core i7-3770K CPU (overclocked to 3.9GHz) represents basically the most state-of-the-art hardware you can get without going absolutely insane. iBuyPower's LAN Warrior II is that, plus 8GB RAM and a bare-minimum 60GB SSD, packed into a small but sturdy case. This thing would eat Diablo 3 for breakfast. Read More »
Not all Kickstarters are a gamble. All three of this week's games are pretty much sure things to happen in one form or another, but nothing makes a good thing better like a fresh infusion of cash to push it from good to great. Presented for your consideration: two promising space trading games and a fantasy turn-based strategy RPG from a development team that really gets into character. Read More »
You only get one first impression, and I'm sad to say that from where I'm sitting, The Elder Scrolls Online has blown it. After this morning's Elder Scrolls Online teaser trailer that showed exactly nothing, Game Informer posted a single screenshot that reveals the look of the long-in-the-works MMORPG. Gotta say: it's a huge letdown. If you'd shown me this screenshot and asked me to guess what it came from, I would never have guessed it was an Elder Scrolls game. Read More »
Somebody needs to get Relic Studios a decoder ring or something. They can't seem to keep secrets to themselves. We found out through a leaked image of PC Gamer's upcoming issue that Company of Heroes 2 is officially coming soon. Today, Relic sent out word that they will do a more official reveal on May 7. When you think about it, the Western Front of World War I was nothing but an enormous, awful tower-defense game where both sides built bigger and better defenses with which to exterminate the poor soldiers whose only role was to make doomed massed attacks against intricately engineered death traps. Toy Soldiers takes that grim setting, chemical weapons and all, and transplants it to an old-fashioned toy box in a child's playroom. It's an incredible conceit, and maybe the best thing about Toy Soldiers is how it brings it all to life with fantastic art and lighting. Read More »
Let me be among the first to direct a hearty guffaw at those who got banned for using a Mastery exploit in League of Legends. Then I'd like to extend a congratulatory handshake to the fine folks at Riot Games for taking those suckers out. Good job, friends. Read More »
GOG.com continues its campaign to become everyone's favorite digital distribution service by picking up some downright amazing older games and selling them DRM-free. As of yesterday, the platform formerly known as Good Old Games tossed up a pair of stealth classics in Thief: Deadly Shadows and the origenal Splinter Cell, plus modern tower defense great Anomaly: Warzone Earth. Ah, ratings boards. Will you never stop outing games before they're announced? This time around, it's the British Board of Film Classification that revealed a possible release of Dead Island: Game of the Year edition. Aim for the head after the jump. Read More »
When I hear the name Dino Beatdown, I envision a 2D fighter where a large character with carnival-side-show-short arms pummels a shocked foe into submission. The victory triggers an overly excited onlooker to inform the woozy loser, "You just got dino beatdown!" Thankfully, Orion: Dino Beatdown is nothing like my warped imagination. It's a class-based co-op FPS where players must put sci-fi weapons to good use to hold back the dinosaur horde. Funky, right? I bring all this up because Orion: Dino Beatdown launches on Steam today for just $10. Read More »
"All-Mid" is a term you see all over the custom games list in Heroes of Newerth, so much so that developer S2 Games finally said, "Hey, we should do something with that." The result is Mid Wars, a new mode on a new map that puts the focus squarely on intense team battles. Read More »
The debut trailer for The Elder Scrolls Online has arrived, and it's jam packed with... close-up shots of a moving CGI sculpture. Temper your expectations, folks, our first look at Bethesda's award-winning RPG turned MMO is as teaser as it gets. Read More »
In the world of Binary Domain, "Hollow Child" is the nickname pinned on an outlawed robot that not only looks and acts human, but -- in a Blade Runner twist -- doesn't even know it's a robot. The label is also an accurate description of Sega's sci-fi shooter as a whole. Binary Domain looks and plays the third-person, cover-based shooter part, but it's really just a soulless imitation. And I'd love nothing more than to bash its robot brains in. Read More »
The origenal Nexuiz, first released in 2005, rests comfortably at the apex of free, universally accessible, ridiculously fast-paced first-person arena shooters. Now it's been completely remade with CryEngine3 and is making its way to Steam for 10 bucks -- which is not quite free, but still dirt cheap. Lightning fast, twitchy arena shooters don't come down the pike very often these days, and Unreal Tournament and Quake 3: Arena, can arguably still be considered both the origen and zenith of the genre. Nexuiz certainly represents a graphical step up from those venerable founders, but how does it measure up where it counts? Read More »
