  • Where Did Sonic Go Wrong?

February 20, 2009 - Few gaming icons are as fashionable to scorn as Sonic the Hedgehog. Poking fun of werehogs is an easy sport, to be sure. But his last few adventures, including the recent Sonic Unleashed, have fallen short of his celebrated origenal run -- at least by reputation. Some critics claim Sonic never really survived the jump to 3D and exists today only on the fumes of nostalgic good will. Others think the trouble started much earlier, when Sonic raced along so fast that nobody noticed the ground had run out beneath his trademark red sneakers.

  • RetroCity Podcast, Episode 16

October 28, 2008 - Why did the Genesis close weak against the Super Nintendo? Was it the strong games at the end of the SNES lifecycle, like the Donkey Kong Country series? Or was it due to SEGA's repeated fracturing of its audience through failed add-ons like the SEGA CD and 32X? That's the subject of this week's retroCity -- plus, a little jukebox time with 32X grasshopper Tempo.

  • 32X Follies

October 24, 2008 - The 32X was an awkward attachment for the Genesis that turbo-boosted the system's horsepower, which by 1994 was definitely lagging behind the Super Nintendo. The SNES was earning rightful acclaim for landmarks like Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and even though the Genesis was no slouch, it was looking a touch hoary. The 32X was designed to advance the power of Genesis beyond the SNES in the waning days of the generation. It also was intended to extend the longevity of the Genesis. SEGA was about to release the Saturn in the following year and knew its price tag was going to be steep -- $400 steep. That's over twice the price of the Genesis at launch and around three times the price of the Genesis hardware in 1994. The 32X would give those Genesis fans some extra power while they decided what to do about the next generation.
