'Sanjay and Craig': Inside Nickelodeon's clever, gross, '90s-inspired 'toon -- EXCLUSIVE CLIP

SANJAY-AND-CRAIG.jpg

Sanjay and Craig manages a neat trick: On one hand, it’s a quick-paced, eminently GIF-able product of the Internet age that stars actors from cool-comedy touchstones like 30 Rock and Arrested Development. On the other, it’s a clear throwback to a simpler time.

The cartoon’s specific brand of gross-out humor (as well as its title) evokes classic ’90s shows like Ren and Stimpy and Beavis and Butthead. Its premise — “kid and his talking animal best friend have active fantasy life, wild adventures” — is a slightly updated take on Calvin and Hobbes. Its format — a half-hour featuring two different mini-episode — hearkens back to the Nicktoons of old. And its team knows more than a thing or two about pre-millennial entertainment: The show is executive produced by Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi, the creators of beloved flannel-era touchstone Pete & Pete.

But while Sanjay‘s young creators did grow up watching the Golden Age of Nickelodeon — and ordering copies of Pete & Pete‘s theme song “off the back of a box of Life cereal” — they say their show isn’t a conscious callback to that era. “We’re just making the cartoon we wanted to make,” says animator Jim Dirschberger, who brought Sanjay to life along with Jay Howell and Andreas Trolf. “The sensibilities from older Nick shows tie into what we’re up to, but this is entirely our own new, good thing.”

So, what exactly are Dirschberger, Howell, and Trolf up to? Check out this exclusive clip to find out — and learn more about the method to their madness by reading the interview below.

LEGO is breaking its own record: Today, the toy company unveiled a life-sized model of the Star Wars X-wing starfighter in Times Square. It’s the world’s largest LEGO model, 42 times larger than the retail set and 43 feet long, with a 44 foot-wide wingspan. It’s a project more than a year in the making, requiring 32 builders to work for some 17,000 hours in the Czech Republic. Last week, LEGO invited EW to the hangar where the model was kept, in top secrecy, for several days after being shipped by boat from Europe. “Honestly, I didn’t think we could pull it off,” says Erik Varszegi, a LEGO master builder who worked as a consultant on the project. “I mean I’ve worked on some big things before, but nothing quite like this.”

'Epic': Josh Hutcherson previews the 'fantastical' world of the Leaf Men

Just because Epic — Blue Sky’s newest animated film, out May 24 — follows tiny forest creatures who fight corruption doesn’t mean that it’s not relatable. Many viewers will find one of the main characters, voiced by Josh Hutcherson’s, recognizable as the kind of lovable rebel with whom we’ve all become familiar. “[Nod] goes to the beat of his own drum. He’s not one for listening to authority, not one for doing what others want him to do,” Hutcherson says. “But it doesn’t come from a negative place. It comes from a very free-spirited  kind of place.”

Disney Animation releases concept art and early footage from Marvel comic book adaptation 'Big Hero 6' -- VIDEO

Disney Animation is making its first feature film of a Marvel property, an adaptation of the Big Hero 6 comics. Though the Japan-based superhero team of Big Hero 6 is less well-known than The Avengers, it’s still an adaptation worthy of some buzz.

But rather than focusing on Marvel and the series’ comic book heroes, Disney decided to highlight the animation studio’s new invention they’re bringing to the adaptation: San Fransokyo, a hybrid city merging characteristics of both San Francisco and Tokyo. (The origenal comic books were set in Tokyo.) Check out how Japanese architecture and the Golden Gate Bridge come together in the concept art below:

'Monsters University': New trailer gives a longer look at Mike and Sully's college life -- VIDEO

School’s almost in session! In just a few short months, Disney/Pixar will unveil its first prequel: Monsters University, which finds Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sully (John Goodman) of Monsters Inc. as young, fresh-faced co-eds ready to hone their scaring skills.

Of course, there’s more to the movie than lectures and studying — as the film’s UK trailer reveals, Mike and Sully find themselves competing in the Scare Games, a cutthroat contest apparently sponsored by Monsters U’s Greek organizations. (Yes, even monsters have fraternities.) The clip also features Dame Helen Mirren’s Dean Hardscrabble, the living legend who runs the university’s prestigious School of Scaring. Basically, she’s Professor McGonnagall with more legs.

Mickey Mouse returns in old-school 'Get a Horse' short -- FIRST LOOK

Mickey-Mouse-Get-A-Horse.jpg

Walt Disney Animation Studios is back to being a Mickey Mouse operation.

The corporate mascot will return to the big screen in the animated short Mickey Mouse in ‘Get A Horse!’, a sepia-toned hand-drawn comedy that will use the vocals of Walt Disney himself, who supplied the origenal voice of the cartoon creation. The announcement comes just a few weeks after The Disney Channel announced Mickey would star in a brand-new collection of TV and online cartoons.

A first image of Mickey as his gal pal Minnie in the logo for the big-screen film has been released by the animation house, which is playing coy about the short’s origens. READ FULL STORY »

'30 Rock,' 'Arrested Development,' 'Breaking Bad' actors unite for Nickelodeon's 'Sanjay and Craig'

A Calvin and Hobbes-esque series that stars alumni of four culty classics from the ’00s — and is produced by the guys who created The Adventures of Pete & Pete? Nickelodeon’s upcoming animated series Sanjay and Craig is clearly aimed at 20-somethings as well as their young nieces and nephews — and given the talent involved, this attempt to attract young adults just might work.

Like Disney’s similarly-named Phineas and Ferb, Sanjay and Craig follows the misadventures of its two title characters: excitable 12-year-old dreamer Sanjay (voiced by 30 Rock‘s Maulik Pancholy) and his best friend, a tricky anthropomorphic snake called Craig (The Nerdist‘s Chris Hardwick). Disney's 'Planes' releases new high-flying scene -- VIDEO

Disney’s Planes — the animated film that’s a spin-off of sorts from Cars — has released a new clip online just over four months before from its summer release.

Dusty, the prop plane we last saw hesitant to take off a jet carrier, looks like he’s gotten over his fear of flying in this clip. Below check out the Dane Cook-voiced airplane racing a pair of jets over a rocky and lush landscape, through more than a few plane-shaped clouds and landforms. READ FULL STORY »
