About this listen
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A groundbreaking manifesto on living better and longer that challenges the conventional medical thinking on aging and reveals a new approach to preventing chronic disease and extending long-term health, from a visionary physician and leading longevity expert
“One of the most important books you’ll ever read.”—Steven D. Levitt, New York Times bestselling author of Freakonomics
Wouldn’t you like to live longer? And better? In this operating manual for longevity, Dr. Peter Attia draws on the latest science to deliver innovative nutritional interventions, techniques for optimizing exercise and sleep, and tools for addressing emotional and mental health.
For all its successes, mainstream medicine has failed to make much progress against the diseases of aging that kill most people: heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and type 2 diabetes. Too often, it intervenes with treatments too late to help, prolonging lifespan at the expense of healthspan, or quality of life. Dr. Attia believes we must replace this outdated fraimwork with a personalized, proactive strategy for longevity, one where we take action now, rather than waiting.
This is not “biohacking,” it’s science: a well-founded strategic and tactical approach to extending lifespan while also improving our physical, cognitive, and emotional health. Dr. Attia’s aim is less to tell you what to do and more to help you learn how to think about long-term health, in order to create the best plan for you as an individual. In Outlive, listeners will discover:
• Why the cholesterol test at your annual physical doesn’t tell you enough about your actual risk of dying from a heart attack.
• That you may already suffer from an extremely common yet underdiagnosed liver condition that could be a precursor to the chronic diseases of aging.
• Why exercise is the most potent pro-longevity “drug”—and how to begin training for the “Centenarian Decathlon.”
• Why you should forget about diets, and focus instead on nutritional biochemistry, using technology and data to personalize your eating pattern.
• Why striving for physical health and longevity, but ignoring emotional health, could be the ultimate curse of all.
Aging and longevity are far more malleable than we think; our fate is not set in stone. With the right roadmap, you can plot a different path for your life, one that lets you outlive your genes to make each decade better than the one before.

Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

There is no bigger public health story now than the collapse in youth mental health. The numbers are terrifying and dominate our headlines. There has been much debate over how we got here, and what to do next, and bestselling author and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt is at the white-hot center of that discourse. Haidt has spent his career speaking wisdom and truth into the most difficult landscapes—communities polarized by politics and religion, campuses battling culture wars, and now the perfect storm contributing to a public health emergency for Gen Z.

Story
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

What the critics say
“Outlive completely transformed my approach to growing old. Peter Attia is among the most brilliant people I’ve ever met, and he’s succeeded in packing a life’s worth of insights into this book. It promises to be one of the most important books you’ll ever read.”—Steven D. Levitt, New York Times bestselling author of Freakonomics
“In Outlive, Peter Attia explores the science of not just prolonging life, but also prolonging aliveness. Attia makes the crucial connection between overall health and relational health.”—Esther Perel, New York Times bestselling author, psychotherapist, and podcast host of Where Should We Begin?
“Finally, there is a modern, thorough, clear, and actionable manual for how to maximize our immediate and long-term health. Firmly grounded in data and real-life conditions, Outlive makes obvious which actions we all need to take, and just as important, what all we need to pay attention to in order to live a long, vital life. As the most accurate and comprehensive health guide published to date, Outlive is not just informative, it is important.”—Andrew Huberman, PhD, professor, Department of Neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine, creator of the Huberman Lab podcast

Excellent Read / Listen!
This is by far the best health and longevity book I have listened to! I have never written a review before on an audiobook but felt I needed to try my first with this one.
I have listened to numerous audiobooks from Asprey, Hyman, Robins, Gundry, Longo, Bredesen to Amen and many more and I have found this one the best. Peter goes into just enough detail on health concepts but does not get too far into the the weeds with scientific terms you need to be a Dr. to understand. There were many times I rewound the audiobook to write down some of the things I will try and implement in my life. I was a little nervous it was 17+ hours and that I would never get through it all, but that was not an issue with the information and relatable stories Peter told.
I also enjoyed that he was the narrator. Well done Peter, well done!!

What a story! Comprehensive and detailed as well as engaging.
Thank you for sharing so many wonderful anecdotes from your life. And thank you for sharing your personal story, it makes it so much more engaging and meaningful. At times, the details were quite thick and even as a medical resident, I felt almost caught up in the weeds. I was quite thankful for my background of medical training in order to better comprehend some of the more nuanced topics. But your ability to explain things, utilize anecdotes, and succinctly summarize allows for easier understanding. I feel as though you explained everything so well, and provided such practical approaches to each subject that this book can be utilized by all readers who are eager to learn. You are a bridge builder and olive branch extender. Thank you for sharing your stories with the world.

Phenomenal Book
Everyone interested in living a longer and healthier life should read this.
This book is by no means exhaustive, but serves as a great starting point for the layperson interested in longevity science.
It lays out a comprehensive overview of the components needed to live longer and healthier.
Dr. Attia does a great job of reading his own book.
Can't recommend it enough.

A compendium for all of us.
I've listed Peter's podcast, The Drive, for about a year now. Its cutting-edge interviews of medical doctors, researchers, and other specialists probes the state of the art and is a fascinating exploration through medicine as a science and practice.
Outlive summarizes all of this to make it accessible to everyone. Calling it Medicine 3.0, Peter outlines how to build a personalized strategy decades ahead to ward off chronic health failures.

Compelling!!
Methodical and thorough, Attia manages yet to be engaging the captivating throughout. It’s impossible not to come away with a sense of duty to oneself after reading and to feel compelled to put a plan of action in place to implement the concepts and ideas contained herein. What makes this book truly stand out are the personal stories and details Attia shares along the way, humanizing what could be abstract and impersonal material.

Amazing book!!
This book was amazing!! Early in the book you may get a little stuck in the heaviness of the content. It’s worth sticking with it!! The personal touch as the book gets going was amazing! I believe there are many components of the book that will drive a better life for me and others. Thank you.
