Gräfinnen
The macron indicates an omitted duplicated character. This abbreviation was especially used for minuscule ‘nn’ and ‘mm’, to reduce the otherwise confusing number of arcades. In this example however, it was obviously done to fit the line.
On the cover of his first release (Tod der CD!, 1987), Austrian musician Hans Platzgummer used such an overbar in his name (actually a more tilde-like one). As no one in the international music scene was familiar with this kind of notation, he became known as Platzgumer. In later releases, Platzgummer himself abandoned the macron and continued to spell his name with one ‘m’ only.
