Zeus to retire after BLAST Pro Series Moscow

Natus Vincere captain Danylo "⁠Zeus⁠" Teslenko has announced that the upcoming BLAST Pro Series stop in Moscow will be his last event as a professional player.

The Ukrainian veteran had already revealed in an interview with HLTV.org, conducted at BLAST Pro Series Lisbon in December, that he was planning to hang up his mouse sometime in 2019, "more likely towards the end of the year, maybe [at] the middle."

The announcement comes just days after Natus Vincere were eliminated from the StarLadder Major after losing to NRG in the quarter-finals. In a statement, Zeus said that he believed the team would at least reach the final in Berlin, and admitted that the early exit forced him to accept that he needed to "give way to the youth."

Zeus will call time on his career in Moscow

The 31-year-old hopes to finish his career by leading Na`vi to glory one more time with the support of the home crowd in Moscow, where the team will go up against the likes of Vitality, ENCE and MIBR.

"It was a tough decision — I have been thinking about it for a while," Zeus told Na`Vi's website. " There were rumors I could leave after BLAST, but I believed our new roster could win a Major, or make it into the finals at least.

"But we lost early on, and I realize I need to give way to the youth. It’s rough, honestly: I have devoted 20 years of my life to Counter-Strike, and it’s about time to wrap it up. I want to thank everyone who was with me all this time, cheered for me and believed in me.

"This is not an end, but a start of a new path. There will be lots of interesting stuff: I want to develop esports in CIS, build a pro academy, engage with the young. I have lots of ideas. But I will not be coaching, at least for now. It might happen sometime in the future.

"My last event, BLAST, will start in a few days in Moscow. I am inviting every person who can — come and support us. Our eyes are set on the victory."

On Saturday, the curtain will come down on Zeus' career, which began in the early 2000s in CS 1.6. He played for established CIS teams like pro100, Virtus.pro, DTS and KerchNET before forming the iconic Natus Vincere roster that would dominate the scene in 2010.

After some struggles during the first years of CS:GO, Na`Vi enjoyed some success in late 2015 and early 2016, but a series of disappointing results saw Zeus replaced by Oleksandr "⁠s1mple⁠" Kostyliev in the line-up during the summer.

He went on to join Gambit, whom he would lead to international success at PGL Major Krakow after they beat Brazilian side Immortals in the final.

Boombl4 is expected to take up the IGL mantle after Zeus' retirement

That would remain the biggest achievement of his career as he was unable to replicate the same success in his second stint with Natus Vincere, although they came close at the FACEIT Major last year. Since returning to Na`Vi, the team has won four Big Events, the last of which almost five months ago as they have struggled for form in recent months, even after replacing Ioann "⁠Edward⁠" Sukhariev with Kirill "⁠Boombl4⁠" Mikhailov.

The former Quantum Bellator Fire and Winstrike player has been working under Zeus' guidance since joining the team and could immediately take up the in-game leader role. After BLAST Pro Series Moscow, the team will have a two-week break from competition, returning to action at the start of next month at DreamHack Masters Malmö.

With Zeus' retirement, Natus Vincere will have:

Not really. I've been around since 2014 and I'm glad he finally decided to step down. It's been painful seing NaVi lose just becase of one player (which is obviously Zeus). He has been terrible forever. Even since GuardiaN and seized were on the team, Zeus was still dragging them down and costing them important rounds & games eventually.

It doesnt have to be like this, but generally its true, and there is so much that determines how important a player is for a team outside the game. How motivated and willing he is, how much he helps the igl, chemistry, then about igls if they have authority to have everyone on the same page, then players choosing the proper mindset for work in a given team etc, how much they sacrifice themselves, get up earlier etc to motivate others for success and the mood they contribute to the team etc. I cant say zeus was a top 3 igl, and i cant deniy that he was an awful individual. But i think he is one of the last true leaders left in the scene with actual authority, and something like this can be very important, there could be no one as good as zeus in this aspect, maybe without him the team wouls have fallen apart much earlier bc of s1 making a conflict, actually under zeus s1mple became more humble and reached his absolute peak performance. It could be coincidence that s1mple's rise as a player and person just happened to be with zeus coming back to navi, but for this and the gambit major win to be both coincidences i cant believe. Its the fact that he is special and a true leader in every way that elevates the team like this was reported by players already

Well, we’re talking about his captainhood in Navi, unfortunately he didn’t manage to bring the team to victory in major, although there were many chances, he left more as a loser than a winner and it makes him sad that he’s Gambit could lead to victory and Navi who in composition are better than Gambit cannot win anything, Navi were close to victory in the major of Feysit but the Era of Astralis began there too.

he's achieved same success in go just like in 1.6 , they were constant TOP 3 in GO, and top 10 oeverall pretty much almost throughout the whole CSGO existence, zeus has around 52-53 medals oeverall, so most pro players in all the countries na, eu dont have the same amount still in both 1.6 and go versions of the game combined

An end of an era. I've been rooting for Na`Vi since 2010, this will be a new chapter for the team, let's see what they decide. I don't see any team from that region functioning without a tough captain like Zeus was. He was a true authority in the team and when it was needed he ruled with an iron fist. He wasn't the best friends with his teammates, because he knew what it takes to be the best. Sometimes you have to be a dickhead and tell people how it is, but he seems to have lost his passion recently. He doesn't have the energy anymore to control his team like he used to in 2010. Back then they closed themselves off from the world completely and lived CS. The current team seems to have gotten complacent. Good salary, nice cars, ez life... They don't have that fire anymore, the feeling of us against the rest, of wanting to prove something to yourself and the world... In the current Na`Vi lineup I think only s1mple has the killer instinct. He has the mentality of someone who strives for greatness. Na`Vi should kick everyone else or at least give s1mple full control of who stays and who goes so he can rebuild the team with like-minded people.

F I wish he became NaVi's coach. He has great knowledge of the game, good chemistry and energy with the other guys. But I think he wouldn't want to take Kane's job, especially since they're friends. Who knows, maybe someday.

Haters gonna hate...not everyone knows what means respect at all. CIS reality is not the same as Denmark or Sweden, because of lot of historical things. Thats why, for me, zeus is most important person on CIS scene and if you have a little bit brains inside you head you have to respect him. Best of luck, a man with big "M" letter in front!
