James Gray’s The Lost City of Z, a period drama set in the Amazon jungle, has been tapped as the closing-night film at the 54th New York Film Festival, organizers announced Wednesday. The pic is set to screen as a world premiere on Oct. 15.

Based on David Grann’s nonfiction book of the same name, the film stars Charlie Hunnam, who plays Lt. Colonel Percey Fawcett, a military man turned explorer searching for a lost city deep in the Amazon. The feature, written and directed by Gray, also stars Sienna Miller, Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland. Darius Khondji served as cinematographer.

The Lost City of Z was produced by Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Anthony Katagas and Dale Armin Johnson, and was executive produced by Brad Pitt and Marc Butan.

Gray’s last film, 2014’s The Immigrant, played the 51st New York Film Festival.

“James Gray is one of the finest filmmakers we have,” said fest director and selection committee chair Kent Jones. “Each of his movies is so beautifully wrought, visually and emotionally, but The Lost City of Z represents something new. It’s a true epic, spanning two continents and three decades, and it’s a genuine vision of the search for sublimity.”

As previously announced, the festival will open with Ava DuVernay’s documentary The 13th and will feature Mark Mills’ 20th Century Women as its centerpiece gala.

Tickets for the New York Film Festival, presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and set to run Sept. 30-Oct. 16, will go on sale Sept. 11.
