Project Description and Background
The project area is a 91-acre peninsula found on the shores of Lake Michigan. The project restoration was primarily on the south side of the island and encompasses approximately 40 acres of land.
The project restored lacustrine, coastal wetland, and other coastal plant communities in support of Great Lakes fishes, amphibians, reptiles, and migratory bird species. Northerly Island’s unique location provides an ecological refuge to a variety of organisms in an otherwise urban environment.
Current Status
Project funded through Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI).
Post-construction monitoring activities were completed in December 2022.
Fiscal closeout scheduled for 2023.
