Manchester United's David De Gea looking for more as he closes in on his 100th appearance
The Spanish stopper has his eyes firmly fixed on remaining as the Red Devils No 1 in the years to come
David De Gea dreams of beating Alex Stepney’s record of most appearances by a Manchester United goalkeeper as he closes in on his 100th game for the Reds.
European Cup winner Stepney played 539 times for the Old Trafford giants and De Gea admits it is a daunting challenge.
But at 23, the Spaniard has time on his side and has firmly established himself as United’s No 1 after a difficult start to his Old Trafford career.
“One hundred, eh? Wow!” said De Gea, who is on 97 appearances.
“I’ll be delighted to reach that figure. It makes me very happy and I want to make it to 200 and then 300 appearances. Please, let it continue!
“The record is a lot of games. You never know, though. At the moment, that figure seems very high, but I’ll try to do my best for the club and just take it one game at a time.
“I hope to play as many games as I can for Manchester United and, who knows, maybe one day I will reach that number and go even higher.”
De Gea is on course to bring his ton up against Tottenham on December 1, and is pleased with how he is performing.
“I’m very happy with my form,” he said. “I feel like this is a particularly good moment in my career right now and I hope to continue in the same vein.
“I feel like I’m always improving and I want to make sure that continues.”
