Based partly on a popular Danish TV series, "The Killing" is a moody, character-driven detective procedural that weaves a murder mystery through a full season or more. The stories unfold through the eyes of Sarah Linden, a detective with the Seattle Police Department and who, at first, must mentor Detective Stephen Holder, a former narcotics cop. While their backgrounds produce investigative styles that clash -- she's by-the-book, he's freewheeling -- they manage to pull together for the case.

Critics Consensus

Though The Killing's third season doesn't do anything much differently than before, it continues to benefit from strong acting, and new viewers should be able to jump right in with ease.

Brian Tallerico HollywoodChicago.com It's well-done routine with three excellent actors at its core but it's routine nonetheless. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 3, 2013 Full Review Phil Dyess-Nugent AV Club The show continues to be both visually entrancing and rich in mood, but when Jewel Staite turns up for a couple of minutes of screen time as Holder's new girlfriend, it's like the clouds finally parting after a week of rain. Rated: A- Jun 2, 2013 Full Review Chris Cabin Slant Magazine It's effective, finely realized genre work from a notoriously dark and idiosyncratic director and it speaks directly to the show's reenergized interest in exuding its own distinct personality. Rated: 3/4 Jun 2, 2013 Full Review Randy Dankievitch Processed Media In other words, we're back to The Killing we all knew and hated - just one with a different (and somewhat more intriguing) mystery at its center. Rated: C+ Feb 19, 2020 Full Review Natalia Marcos El Pais (Spain) If this is the end, the series has gone on out on a high. [Full Review in Spanish] Sep 24, 2018 Full Review Britt Hayes ScreenCrush I have to admit, I'm into it. Whether or not The Killing is picked up for season 4, we just watched a detective (and her partner) evolve over the course of three seasons, with all the real-life horror she faces every day taking her down this path. Anders N Edit, at first I thought as good as the first season, too much mood and rain. But actually it got better and better, and until the last episode, it was far better than the first season and the second season. But the last episode, the plot was apart completely. Really absolutely horrible, 0 stars. Was this imposed by management? The actors handle it well, and its the like writers had to handle the ridiculousness as well, and they did pretty well. But it is hard to reconcile the talent of the writers with the absolute insanity of the last episode plot twists (or detonations). Really, WTF happened? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review Chet T This show is generally well written. It has some compelling characters that draw you in. This was especially true in seasons 1&2 with the two main characters and the parents of the missing girl. Season 3 is probably the best overall season even though it does lack the character connection that was present in 1&2. Season 3 has a number of solid twists and thrills. However, the final twist that unveiled the actual killer was a bit unrealistic and landed a bit flat in my opinion. Season 4 was good but disjointed. The ending was good if you like tied up loose ends. Overall, a solid series that follows the classic formula of revealing just enough to keep you tuned in. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/23/24 Full Review Anthony Y Best season for this show by far phenomenally written, and the characters were still likable Unfortunately, the tide will turn in the last season, and the two main characters of this show are literally so unlikable. I couldn't finish the show. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Ruth P This I think is one of the worst crime dramas I've seen , the detectives as far as I'm concerned are bumbling idiots. Inept. Their bumbling caused a teacher to end up in a coma and a guy to be paralyzed. To be honest I'm still watching to see just how much worse it can get and really wanna know who killed Rosie,I'm almost to the end of Season 2. As a mother Linden is lacking , always apologizing to her son, no real warmth and doesn't wanna give him to her ex, wow.. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/19/23 Full Review the s I'm not a director or even a script writer. But I know that throwing in a bunch of useless footage of Peter Sarsgard sitting in a prison cell every 10 minutes and breaking up the flow of the storyline is a horrible idea. Honestly this season wouldn't have been bad at all if they wouldn't have kept cramming that useless prison footage in constantly. Whoever had that bright idea ruined the season. And the irony is that you can fast forward through all of it and it doesn't affect the story at all except to improve it. As with seasons 1 & 2, acting is remarkable, writing is mediocre, plot is stereotypical. Wedging Sarsgaard into it sent it from a 3-4 star season to a 2 star season. It's like the producer knew Sarsgaard and owed him a favor so they threw it into the plot line and wrote him into the story after the fact. Either way, it genuinely hurts this season in the worst ways by breaking up the momentum of the actual plot. And I like Sarsgaard…he's a great actor. It's not his fault, just a horrible call to shoe horn him into a story where the HOURS of slow, boring prison footage adds absolutely nothing to the plot. The worst is how the season ends…no spoilers but the most ridiculous character suddenly becomes a suspect and it rolls out in the most unbelievable way. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review David G Our story in season 3 has a very different flavor but the same, excellent acting and story which you don't expect the way it ends up.
