DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1725Z July 14, 2024

SMOKE:
Canada/United States/Southern Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Pacific Ocean/Atlantic
Ocean...
A significant amount of mixed density smoke attributed to a combination
of seasonal fire activity throughout the Southeastern United States and
numerous wildfires throughout northern Canada, Washington State, Oregon,
California, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming Utah and Arizona was observed this
morning over an extensive area including northern Canada, the majority of
the Continental U.S. and parts of southern Mexico and the Pacific Ocean
off the West Coast of the U.S. and Mexico. This mixed density smoke was
seen extending east through the entirety of Canada from the Yukon Province
into the Labrador Sea before extending further east into the Northern
Atlantic Ocean just off coastlines of Western Europe. Areas of moderate
to thick density smoke was seen moving east along the southern border of
the Northwest Territories and the northern borders of British Columbia,
Alberta and Saskatchewan while areas of moderate to light density remnant
smoke were observed extending south from the Canada-U.S. Border through
the majority of the U.S. and into the Gulf of Mexico.

Western United States...
Moderate to thick density smoke was observed this morning covering
a widespread area throughout the Western United States. This area of
moderate density smoke was seen extending northeast from the Pacific
Ocean off the northern coastline of California into Oregon, where it
was then seen extending as far east as central South Dakota. Areas of
thick density smoke were observed where the Wyoming, Montana, and South
Dakota borders meet. The moderate and thick density smoke observed in
this region is attributed to the numerous amount of ongoing and newly
onset wildfires located throughout Washington State, Oregon, central
California, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Utah.

Idaho...
A moderate sized wildfire located in southeastern Idaho was seen emitting
moderate smoke within the larger area of moderate to thick smoke observed
throughout the Western U.S.; a large amount of cloud cover was present
in the area this morning preventing a more detailed analysis, however,
it is likely that thicker density smoke is being concealed.

DUST:
A moderate amount of Saharan dust was observed over the Atlantic
Ocean with light amounts of Saharan dust seen over the majority of the
Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
