DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0103Z August 9, 2024

SMOKE:
Canada/North Central and Southeastern United States/Atlantic Ocean...
Smoke of varying density was observed over an expansive area stretching
from Alaska and the Arctic to Central California, Baffin Island, the Great
Lakes, and the North Atlantic. Active moderate to heavy smoke emissions
were observed from wildfires across the Yukon, Northwest Territories,
British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the West Coast with the
thickest emissions seen in the Northwest Territory. The moderate to
thick smoke continues over Northwest Territory and Nunavut.  Moderate
to thick smoke plumes could be seen later this evening in California,
Washington, and Oregon. Other fire detection's in Idaho and Utah looked
to be releasing at least moderate density smoke but cloud cover over
the areas precluded further smoke analysis.

Gulf of Mexico and surrounding areas…
Light remnant smoke was seen over portions of the Southeastern CONUS,
Mexican Gulf Coastal Plain, the Gulf of Mexico, and portions of the NW
Caribbean. The source of this smoke is agricultural burning across the
central and southern Plains and southeastern U.S. along with remnant
smoke from the large wildfires out west.

DUST:
A moderate amount of Saharan Dust was seen traveling westward across
the Atlantic Ocean where the leading edge continues to move westward
into the eastern Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.

A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.

Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
