Ekscesa koeficients (kurtosis) ir statistisks rādītājs, ar kura palīdzību var noteikt rezultātu izkliedi pa x asi. Citiem vārdiem sakot, cik lielā mērā rezultāti tuvojas centrālajam punktam. Ja ekscess ir negatīvs, tad normālsadalījuma zvanveida grafiks izskatās pieplacināts pie x ass, ja pozitīvs - "zvans" ir augsts un šaurs. Ja ekscesa koeficients tuvojas nullei (aptuveni robežās ±1 - atkarībā no izlases apjoma), tad var runāt par atbilstību normālsadalījumam.
