Puerto Rico Surf Spot Map
Puerto Rico is the Caribbean's version of
the North Shore of Hawaii. It is blessed with good surfing conditions all year and can get pretty big and powerful. It also has the Hawaiian localism to a certain extent. Surfing goes off in a big way in Puerto Rico, and tourism is big in the area. That said, quiet waves are still on offer
if you are prepared to look.
Northerly swells that are generated from
the east coast of America are the main source of the waves in Puerto Rico, October to February being the main surfing season. The surf can be anything from 2ft to 20ft, and there are waves to suit all abilities.
There are surf spots located right around the main island of Puerto Rico and its tropical waters and good weather make for some great surf conditions. Surfing has traditionally centered around Rincon, and although the waves are good so are the locals, and the wave is normally busy. A better bet for surf would be Dunes or Montones, with beginners being more suited to Punta Higuero.
The area around Rincon, on Puerto Rico's northwest coast, is popular with surfers due to some world class waves.
The waves throughout PR are mainly reefs and beach breaks, barrels are abundant. A great place for a surf trip. Waves to look out for are
Gas Chambers
and
Middles. Middles hosted the
Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico in 2010 and the event was won by
Kelly Slater.
