What is an ISBN number?

ISBN(International Standard Book Number) is a 10 or 13-digit unique identifier for books found on the back cover or copyright page. 1970-2007 each published book has a 10-digit format of 9-digit numeric + [1-digit numeric or character "X" check digit], for example, 0-936385-405, 0-8044-2957-X.
FYI "X" actually means "10" in ISBN, and you, as a book buyer, could ignore all the hyphens "-".

On Jan 1, 2007, they began the changeover to 13 digits number starting with the prefix "978" or "979", for instance, "9780804429573". If you find both 10 and 13-digit ISBN number on the book cover, don’t worry, both are valid to use. Use either one in the book price comparison for the cheapest books

Why search by ISBN number?

An ISBN refers to a specific edition of books. Searching by ISBN number, you will get the correct book edition, paperback or hardcover, large or regular print, printed country, language, e-book, audiobook, or paper book. For instance, a student should use ISBN to find the correct edition of textbooks.

Does the ISBN-13 have any meaning imbedded in the numbers?

There are five parts to an ISBN number

  1. the current prefix of "978" or "979"
  2. the registration group or country
  3. the publisher
  4. the publication element (title and format)
  5. the single digit check digit at the end of the ISBN
