Harald Blüchel (born 19 February 1963 in Nuremberg) is a German composer, pianist and music producer. He became one of his most famous protagonists in techno music between 1989 and 1999 under the artist name "Cosmic Baby". Since the year 2000 he has moved with his compositions mainly in the field of (neo-) classical music.
At the age of seven being a highly-qualified child, he received an education as a classical pianist at the Nuremberg Conservatory. Frustrated by the power pressure there, but fascinated by the music of German groups like "Cluster", "Tangerine Dream" and "Kraftwerk", he soon devoted himself to electronic music.
In 1987, Harald moved to West Berlin and studied composition at the "Hochschule der Künste" (now UdK). In 1988 he entered the circle of the newly emerging techno movement.
With his productions, he created a stylistic sound language that can be characterized as a very personal synthesis of driving arpeggios, superimposed sequencer figures and impressive melodies. The best example is the first "Cosmic Baby" album "Stellar Supreme" released in September 1992 by Mark Reeders label "MFS". At the same time, he set up the project "The Visions of Shiva" with Paul van Dyk and published the single "Perfect Day", which quickly became a club hit. He also co-produced with Mijk van Dijk on "MFS" the very first mixed Trance-CD: "Tranceformed from beyond".
In 1993, in co-operation with Kid Paul, the trance anthem "Café del Mar" was released under the name of "Energy 52", which became one of the world's most famous pieces of this musical direction. In addition, the second Visions of Shiva single "How much can you take ?" was also successful.
That same year, Harald switched to "Logic Records" and focused on his solo project. In January 1994, he released the single "Loops of Infinity", which made it one of the first trance productions to the German charts, followed by the 2nd album "Thinking about myself".

In 1995 he left "Logic Records" and founded his own label "Time out of Mind", where he clearly separated from the classic trance sound and proved to be very experimental in the following years.
Engaged with his role as a composer & producer was his presence as a live performer: his virtuosic skills on the keyboards and synthesizers gave him an exception and made him one of the most popular live acts in clubs and the ever-increasing rave events ("Mayday", "Time Warp", "Tribal Gathering", etc.). In addition to groups such as "Orbital", "The Prodigy" and "Underworld", he created the ground for electronic artists from the techno environment to also perform at the established rock festivals. In 1997 he played at "Rock am Ring" / "Rock im Park "- as the first techno artist ever.
At the same time, he was interested in writing music for the theater. In cooperation with the "Pyro Space Ballet" the Techno-Musical "Futura" had world premiere in April 1994 at the "Akademie der Künste Berlin" (AdK). Two years later he got the offer to realize the soundtrack to Max Frisch's theatrical play "Andorra" in the state theater Stuttgart under the direction of Crescentia Dünsser & Otto Kukla.
At the end of 1999, he retired from the "techno scene" for many reasons, withdrew from the public, and since then has devoted himself mainly to the composing of classical-contemporary music for theater productions. For example, in 2000 a "Musik für Streichquartett" (music for string quartet) was created for the video opera "Memory", and in 2003 music for soprano & countertenor & harddiscrecording for Susan Sontags theater play "The woman from the sea" - both for "Theater Neumarkt / Zurich", directed by Otto Kukla.

In 2002, Harald became acquainted with the music producer Christopher von Deylen, who celebrated international success as "Schiller". This was the project "Blüchel & von Deylen". In January 2004 the first album "Bi Polar" appeared on "TrueNote / Edel". Due to the good response from the buyers, the sequel album "Mare Stellaris" appeared as the soundtrack for "Long Night of the Stars", which had been initiated by all German planetaries with special programs.

German flyer about the 2006-2007 solo releases |
The "Zauberberg" trilogy inspired by Thomas Mann's novel were his first solo releases under his original name. There he created rather experimental "listening pieces", which may be roughly integrated into "dark ambient" or "modern art music" categories. The first part, "Die Toteninsel" published in September 2006, was inspired by a painting by Arnold Böcklin of the same name. In April 2007, the second part, "caged", was published - a play on words refering to John Cage and being a "caged" prisoner, the inner life of a person "being lost from the world".
Furthermore, Harald continued his theatrical work at the beginning of 2007 with Federico García Lorca's play "Bernarda Alba's house" in the production by Hans Neuenfels for the "Schauspiel Köln". In 2009, he composed the music for two plays: In May, the premiere of "Danach: Wie Robinson!?" in Berlin "Theater unterm Dach" (according to Arno Schmidt, directed by Lina Antje Gühne); in October was the first performance of "Tannöd" in the Hamburger Schauspielhaus (by Andrea Maria Schenkel, director: Crescentia Dünßer). Premiered on 18 February 2010, the play "Eislaufen", focusing on the life and work of poetess Inge Müller, was performed at the Berlin "Theater unterm Dach", being a co-operation between Harald and the "Kollegen & Gühne" group.

(Harald Blüchel interview in "Nürnberger Nachrichten" newspaper, issue 23/May/2017 - German language) |
After several years of concentrated engagement with the piano and moving from Berlin to a countryside place, Harald returned to the stage in October 2016 with "solo piano concerts", for example on 28 November at the Berlin "Volksbühne / Roter Salon". Hi calls his new composition style "Romantic Minimalism", with classical reference to the minimal music of "Steve Reich", "Philip Glass" and "Simeon ten Hold". There are also connections with neoclassical artists, such as "Ludovico Einaudi", "Yann Tiersen" and "Max Richter".

15 minutes shortfilm from 1991 by Silvia Kirchhof, soundtrack by
Cosmic Baby, with thanks to "Harry Blüchel" :-)
"Die Fliegen-Klatsche" is a very personal piece of work of the artist
Silvia Kirchhof; it is made to her childhood as daughter of a
psychiatrist and a neurologist, who integrated his experiences with
art, film, and photography into his word: her first exposure to
schizophrenia and creativity. The unnaturally projected faces in the
video are taken from 16 mm scientific films of her father and his
colleagues, which she watched as a child, basically as a substitute
for television.
betrachtete.

The following German text is printed on the booklet (German release):
And this one is on the US release:
We travel through time. Our language is even more complex than the one you earthlings refer to as hieroglyphics. For it is written in sounds. In sounds of harmony. Our bodies do not exist. We can paint our feelings in the most beautiful colours you will never be able to perceive. And therefore you will never be fortunate enough to experience your souls.
But still you are like us!
Can you swim in the rain like we can? Or even climb onto the clouds? Perhaps even dance round the sun with us? Or will you help us to plant new stars? How wonderful it would be to find new friends and finally bind ourselves to planet home. Then we could embrace the giant trees together and preserve all those wonderful atoms. Never again would you have to roam the awful nothingness in order to grasp at entirety. Listen to our advice. Believe us. It will only take a small, cautious step and you will gain entry into the dimensions of love. Then you will feel that nature on your blue planet is nothing but the paradise that you seek all your life.
Yes you are like us!
Your probes are transmitting greetings to us. We liked what we heard. It touched something sunken into infinite oblivion for a long time. Thus, we have crossed the borders. We want to emigrate into your world. Will you welcome us? Or perhaps you want to transplant yourselves into our world? Whatever the choice may be - we are on our way - on our way to you.
For we are like you!
Cosmic Baby, Berlin Oktober 1994
When I watched "Blade Runner" in 1982 I was still in elementary school. I was overcome! "Blade Runner" gave an extremely impressive vision of the near future: multicultural mega-cities, the power of multinational corporations in the fields of computer-, electronic- and communications industries; the climatic upheavals as a result from the loss of the ecological balance; the problem of not being able to differentiate between humans and their similar artificial creatures. Twelve years later, these subjects are more of a part of our reality than before. The difference being, what in 1982 was still "science fiction", is for us now an almost apparent reality.
In music, the transition from acoustic to electronic music happened at breakneck pace. It seems likely that the 90s of our century will be called the era of "techno" music.
In the film Dr. Tyrell was called "father" by Roy Batty, the replicant. In a similar way I also want to call Vangelis, the composer of "Blade Runner", one of the "fathers" of my musical development. As such, I was incredibly proud and happy when I received the offer to rearrange this fantastic musical work with my outlook of the 90s.
Cosmic Baby, Berlin October 1994
When it becomes difficult, in face of the flood without comment, but very well filtered information and formatted thought patterns are there for you to concentrate and to listen to, to finally draw your own conclusions, then there is a world, where speed is a value as such, and often (for you) there is only the emergency brake. I stopped the train at full speed on an open track, despite pressure from the outside, my inner restlessness urged me to reach the fast connection train in the next station absolutely. It's also called escapism: the escape from this reality. Where to? I created for myself a gingerbread world consisting of romantic harmonies.
Starting with "Stunde Null" and "14 Pieces" I set myself in motion again with my own power and my own plan. Without romantic escapist thoughts, and in an abstract way, I'm busy with these events. You might say as the third part of a trilogy, "Kinetik" brings back rhythm and motion to my music with clubsounds for the dance-floor and thereby completes my new musical beginning.

[Some notes about this track by Cosmic Baby:
a) Paul & me met the first time in 1989 at a club, where he did one his first DJ-sets. We became friends and started an intensive creative exchange, while working on a vision, we shared: Transforming our love & enthusiasm to the starting techno-house into truely independent, significant musical statements. Together and as solo-artists. A great exchange of abilities began: I became his "musical teacher", he showed me the structural elegance of "aesthetical efficiency" in futuristic dance track-arrangements.Harald Blüchel in Oct 2005, interviewed by Detlef Buske]
b) In Summer 1990, we went to Ibiza. Our favourite place to be was the "Cafe del Mar". There, we enjoyed the evening-hours in company with beautiful music and people, who where quite different from the mainstream-club-crowds.
c) In Automn 1992, Paul returned from another Ibiza-vacation. He told me about a certain piece he listened at the "Cafe del Mar", he was electrified by. We found out, that it had been music by Wim Mertens, a composer, I highly adore. We decided, to take his "Struggle for pleasure" as inspiration for a very special piece to create.
d) Between September and December we worked highly concentrated and acribicly on the composition. Our common goal: every entire detail of the piece supposed to become "excellent" - no "that's already o.k."- compromises to be made!
e) Finally in January 1993, we produced the two original versions at the studio with the engineer Jens Woynar. Afterwards we were in serious negotiations with "Eye Q"-records. In the end, they oddly realeased "Cafe del Mar" without having our permission: so, we went to court, the record had to be withdrawn from the shops. A big dilemma for us: the piece became THE anthem right after beeing played by the DJs for the first time - the people couldn't buy the record, though...
f) Since "Energy 52" is Paul's project, the piece "Cafe del mar" however composed by the two of us, we decided, that Paul alone should be responsible for all following negotiations. Four years later (!) the Hamburg based label "Superstition" made the first "official" and authorized realease, followed by a bunch of further remix-releases, which all became highly successful. Unfortunately, the record company labeled the wrong credits in the beginning, which was corrected after some time. The correct credits are: - for the original versions (Kid Paul Mix, Cosmic Baby's impression): "composed & produced by Paul M. and Cosmic Baby" - for the following releases: "composed by Paul M & Cosmic Baby", produced by Paul M.".

A1 ist the same as on the "EFA 11601" record and the 'Tresor Compilation'. The A2 track also uses the "It's You I Want Tonight" vocal sample that can also be found on the "EFA 11601" B-side 'Rawlove', but the music mix is different. B1-B2 has nothing to do with Cosmic Baby, so this EP is probably a label compilation promo featuring a different artist on side B.

CD: 05/2015 DE (Bureau B; BB203) ^ 07:46 Die Wilde Jagd: Wah Wah Wallenstein
Promo note: Die Wilde Jagd (The Wild Hunt) is a joint project of Ralf Beck and Sebastian Lee Philipp, named after an ancient Germanic myth. Beck is a musician and producer from Düsseldorf. He has released several albums as part of the duo Nalin & Kane, as well as under the name Unit 4. Philipp is part of the Berlin-based electro-wave duo Noblesse Oblige. They joined forces after meeting in Düsseldorf's club Salon des Amateurs. It seems no coincidence that Düsseldorf is the duo's founding city: their music is full of subtle references to local acts, such as Kraftwerk, NEU!, DAF, Liaisons Dangereuses, Pyrolator, the Krupps and Propaganda. Using numerous analog keyboards and recording devices, and combining them with a diverse range of percussion instruments, they create their own "hunting music", which at times sounds unsettling, like swampland or a dark forest, but also urgent and pressing, like incandescent lasers or a hypnotic dance. Out May 1, 2015, on CD, vinyl+CD, download
Written and produced by Jette von Roth & Mijk van Dijk.

The Universal Product Code (UPC aka EAN.UCC-12) is the original
12-digit barcode widely used in USA and Canada for items in stores
since 1974. The International Article Number (EAN-13) was developed as
a superset of UPC with an additional 13th digit for international use
(UPC has the prefix 0 in the EAN system).
UPC consists of an item group digit, a 5-digit manufacturer code, a
5-digit product reference number assigned by the manufacturer and a
check digit. EAN is build up using 2-3 digits for country prefix, 4-5
digits manufacturer code, 5-digit product reference number and a check
digit.
For a list of EAN country codes see Wikipedia,
but note that they're not valid for 12-digit UPC codes.
