The steps to self-reliance takes time and hard work, and these steps: (1) Assume responsibility, (2) Be informed, (3) Know where you're going, and (4) Make your own decisions. Allen frequently checks a card with these steps typed on it to help himself develop self-reliance and his father presents him with Self Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Allen learned to develop the habit of self-reliance and became a happier person.

In this otherwise unegaging claptrap of becoming more self reliant, the whole thing is eclipsed over the return of three of the characters of one of my
...
favorite movies on this site, 'Dating: Do's and Don'ts[' Alan Woodruff, his Mom and Dad, and there's even reference to his girlfriend Ann. Although Alan's last name is not mentioned, it's perfectly clear that it's him, with his parents and all. Anyways, Alan is clearly grown up in this picture, and this time he is fighting self reliance. He turns to his teacher (his French teacher?) who of course, gives him a chart about how to become more self reliant. As he becomes more and more confident, he starts wearing ties on dates (Does he bring flowers, if it's a ritzy affair?.. oops, wrong movie) and settling school issues on his council. Again, not really much of a movie, but what really makes this film highly reccomended is the return of all these recognizable characters.
