Pentref bychan yng nghymuned Eglwys-bach, bwrdeistref sirol Conwy, Cymru, yw Tal-y-cafn[1][2] (hefyd Tal-y-Cafn). Saif ger y briffordd A470, lle mae pont yn croesi Afon Conwy i gysylltu â'r ffordd B5106 ger Tyn-y-groes ar lan orllewinol yr afon. Mae ychydig i'r de o bentref Llansanffraid Glan Conwy.

Dim ond dyrnaid o dai a geir yn y pentref ond ceir gorsaf ar Reilffordd Dyffryn Conwy gerllaw Bryn Castell, sef hen domen amddiffynnol o'r Oesoedd Canol.

Ceir Gardd Bodnant tua milltir i'r dwyrain.

Fferi Talycafn

[golygu | golygu cod]

Cyn codi’r bont dros yr afon yng Nghonwy roedd Fferi neu ysgraff Talycafn yn fodd bwysig o groesi i berfeddwlad Eryri. Ar un cyfnod cymerodd yr Iarll Londsdale, enw adnabyddus ym myd bocsio, ofal o’r fferi a digwyddodd ddamwain ddifrifol i un o’i weision pan yn croesi. Roedd rhaff wedi ei gosod ar draws yr afon er mwyn cario ‘windlass’ windlass (UK) ar yr ysgraff. Daeth cwch mawr o gyfeiriad Conwy, cyffwrdd â’r rhaff a dragio’r cychwr i’r dŵr ac fe’i lladdwyd. Derbyniodd gweddw’r cychwr gini o iawndal gan yr Iarll a thraddododd Ficer Conwy bregeth i goffau amdano.[3]
Mae Stan Wicklen yn cyfeirio at windlass, sef, yn ôl yr OED:

A mechanical contrivance working on the principle of the wheel and axle, on a horizontal axis (thus distinguished from a capstan); consisting of a roller or beam, resting on supports, round which a rope or chain is wound; used for various purposes, esp. on board ship for weighing the anchor or hauling upon a purchase, at the head of a mine-shaft for hoisting coal or other mineral, or for raising a bucket from a well.

A dyma esbonio efallai y cofnod canlynol gan Y Parch. Hugh Davies (awdur Welsh Botanology) yn nodi mewn llythyr i’w gyfaill Thomas Pennant am y trafferthion a gafodd ar y 3 Rhagfyr 1794 wrth ddychwelyd o Sir y Fflint i’w gartref yn Abergwyngregyn ar noson stormus:

I do not delay to let you know that I have survived the drefsing? [sic] [drenching?] I underwent on “Wednesday [3ydd Rhagfyr] by the continual rain. My hand is blistered in holding the bridle; the current of water at Talycafn was really frightful, and no line [windlass?] to conduct us across the river as usual! A tremendous gale of wind which continued about eight and forty hours and came on the next day after I came to Downing, has caused great losses in this neighbourhood, and in some part [sic] of Anglesea [sic]; many ricks of hay have been entirely swept away; fruit & other trees torn up; houses unroofed?i thank God by the activity of my servants and neighbours my little stack of hay was with difficulty saved.[4]
