Definition
An edge-sensitive mechanism provides a camera with a capability of maintaining edge information while performing the processing operations.
A well-designed camera image processing solution should maintain the edge information while performing the processing operations [1–3]. Edges are important features since they indicate the presence and the shape of various objects in the image. To preserve edges and details in the captured image, an edge-sensing mechanism should be employed in the processing pipeline.
Both an adaptive behavior of the processing solution and tracking of the structural content of the image data are obtained using the so called edge-sensing weights. Weights are used to regulate the contribution of the available samples inside the spatial arrangements under consideration, emphasize inputs which are not positioned across an edge, and to direct the demosaicking process along the natural edges in the true image. This ensures a sharply formed output camera image.
