As an alternate etymology, Anna Maria Hall and Patrick Weston Joyce have written that the name may have derived from the wood being sourced from forest land in the village or barony of Shillelagh, County Wicklow. The geographic name Shillelagh derives from ga, or "Descendants of Éalach" in English.

Another etymology was from the Ó hÉilidhe clan. They had a characteristic walk that was associated with inviting any challenges for Bataireacht, dragging their coat-tails - an SiUl-hÉilidhe. 'The walk of Healy' existed in West Cork probably long before the later Faction Fighting traditions. Its anglicisation into Shiulelagh preserves the pronunciation of the first syllable and probably pre-dates the Great Famine of 1847.
