Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Bruzaholm (talk | contribs) at 18:24, 29 August 2011 (Errors in Did you know?: rm). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 18:25 on 4 November 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

What in the world is a “career-year”? It has neither a Wikipedia entry nor a Wiktionary entry. Electrical & computer engineer (talk) 03:24, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A "career year" usually means the best year of a player's career, or the year by which the player would want to be measured. I've heard the phrase many times, but we shouldn't use it if it will confuse many readers; are there others who are unfamiliar with it? (Incidentally, I do not believe that "career year" should be hyphenated.) Newyorkbrad (talk) 03:28, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have to say I've never heard of it (I'm a British sports fan). Woody (talk) 12:50, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've heard the term used by some US sports commentators, but didn't understand what it meant. Certainly never used in the UK. Best to replace it. Modest Genius talk 16:12, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in today's or tomorrow's On this day

Main page states that Inca Emperor Atahualpa was executed today in 1533. Atahualpa page gives july 26 as date of execution, with 29 Aug shown (in infobox) as date of burial. Reporters: please first correct today's or tomorrow's regular version.

Errors in Did you know?

The tagline for Gun Hagglund is in error. She was not the world's first female TV news presenter; Barbara Mandell of ITN in Britain pipped her by three years. [1] [2] No doubt the Swedish source cited believes in its accuracy, but the article creator should have done a cursory check. It took me all of thirty seconds to find out about Mandell.  ῲ Ravenswing ῴ  13:52, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is not that easy to establish exactly who was the first to read news in television, but unlike Mendell and possibly others, Hägglund was an established news anchor in a national televised news show. Although a number of obituaries says that Hägglund was the first woman news anchor, I chose to put it more diplomatically "commonly recognized (as the first news anchor)". This was also suggested for the hook, but shortend for reasons not known to me. Bruzaholm (talk) 14:13, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is that easy to establish who was the first to read news on television. I found two reliable sources claiming a 1955 date for Mandell, which is three years before Hagglund, and don't doubt I could find a number more. The hook says "first female news presenter," not "first female news presenter to complete a certain undefined and arbitrary term."  ῲ Ravenswing ῴ  15:08, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
