Description
Designation: Monument zone Hambach Castle (also Maxburg)
Location: At the top of a wooded foothill on the Haardtrand, southwest of the village on the Schlossberg.
Place: Quarter Hambach, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
Construction time: Founded probably in the first half of the 11th century.
Description: From 1100 to the early 19th century owned by the cathedral chapter of Speyer, expanded several times, especially in the 13th century.
Multiple restored, slighting 1688, under Crown Prince Maximilian 1845-46 neo-Gothic extension by August von Voit.
Reinstatement 1955-57 and 1965-69.
1979-82 thorough restoration and complete interior design (architects H. Augeneder, Bad Dürkheim and H. Römer, Kaiserslautern).
Restoration of the outer circular wall 1994 to 2000, conversion from 2006 onwards.
Remains of a post-Carolingian Ottonian wall (9th / 10th. Century).
Partially developed ruin of the "Kestenburg", remains of the donjon, probably about 1200, high facing, four-storey Palas of the 13th century, outer ring wall.
Small residuals of the neo-Gothic castle.
