The 165mm Demolition gun was officially known as the Royal Ordnance L9 with the L9A1 gun being a later variant. The BL 165 mm (6.5 inch) was capable of firing a 64 lb demolition projectile at distances up to 2000 yards. It was mounted on [[Royal Engineers]] [[AVRE]] versions of the [[Churchill tank]], [[Centurion tank]], and American [[Patton tank]]. The rounds, which includes 40lbs of [[C-4]]), are more like tossed grenades than large bullets. When fired, the massive round may be observed withe the naked eye flying through the air in a high arc, landing with a huge explosion. The gun's primary purpose is for clearing obstacles such as walls, fences, roadblocks, bunkers, etc or for destroying buildings. It is not effective at anti-personnel or anti-tank warfare. When firing the main gun, the ARVE must close all hatches as the blast radius can be larger than the effective range of the gun!
