editFrom Proto-Norse ᚦᚱᛁᛃᛟᛉ (þrijoʀ) (feminine plural), from Proto-Germanic *þrīz (“three”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *tréyes (“three”). Cognate with Old English þrī, þrīe, Old Frisian thrē, thriā, Old Saxon thrīe, Old Dutch thri, Old High German drī, Gothic 𐌸𐍂𐌴𐌹𐍃 (þreis).
