From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (spwhtn', spwc- /⁠spōxtan, spōz-⁠/, to thrust; to overstep, disobey; to delay, reject). Compare Old Armenian սպուժեմ (spužem), an Iranian borrowing.
