English: Fenwicks window, Christmas 2009 Since 1971 there has been a Christmas display in the shop windows, and people come from, apparently, 'all over the world' to look at it - certainly I know of friends who come from as far away as Middlesbrough! There are records however going back to the 1930's to indicate that displays have been done.
This year the theme is a very traditional nativity - very different from the 2002 Aliens theme (Christmas in Another World) which showed aliens celebrating Christmas and sparked lively discussion in the letters page of the local papers... however, the fact that these characters are wearing Arab dress has provoked some debate - not quite sure that the commentators really know exactly where Bethlehem is.
