Save Rock and Roll is the upcoming fifth studio album by American pop punk band Fall Out Boy. It will be the band's first studio album since coming out of a four-year hiatus, a follow-up to 2008's Folie à Deux. The album was recorded in secrecy in 2012 after multiple reformation attempts, and upon completion, was announced on February 4, 2013. The album's first single, "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)", was released following the announcement, and has reached charts worldwide including the US Billboard Hot 100 at No. 26 and in the UK at No. 5. The album is scheduled for release on April 15 and 16, 2013 worldwide through Island Records. Upon release, the band will embark on a Save Rock and Roll tour to promote the album.

Background

After the release of the greatest hits album Believers Never Die – Greatest Hits, it was announced on November 20, 2009 that the band would go into an indefinite hiatus for the band members to "decompress" and focus on side projects.[1]

In 2010, vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump began producing solo material. This led to 2 releases in 2011, an EP titled Truant Wave and a full album titled Soul Punk.[2] Soul Punk in particular featured no guest musicians, as Stump played all the instruments on the album, wrote all lyrics, composed all music, and self-produced the material.[3] In July 2010, Pete Wentz, with singer Bebe Rexha, formed the ska/electropop band Black Cards, a project inspired by a discussion Wentz had with producer Sam Hollander about mashing up ska, dance and reggae with 1980s British rock and pop to create a new experimental sound.[4] No formal albums were released, but a couple mixtapes and an EP were eventually released in 2012. Drummer Andy Hurley and guitarist Joe Trohman formed heavy metal supergroup The Damned Things and released an album, Ironiclast, in 2010, with the band entering a hiatus of their own in late 2011.

In 2012, rumours of Fall Out Boy writing new music started to circulate. It was revealed by Beau Bokan of Blessthefall on August 2, 2012 on his Twitter account that he had heard from a member of the band at the Warped Tour that it was "official" that Fall Out Boy was writing a new record.[5] However, Stump, Wentz and Trohman were quick to deny any work by the band collectively to write new material.[6][7] The band's management team requested the information be removed shortly after.[5] Later in the year, Keltie Colleen, an employee at entertainment news program The Insider, also posted on Twitter that she received information that the band are working on new music.[8] Journalists believed it was inevitable because of the negative reception surrounding both Wentz's and Stump's side projects.[7]

On February 4, 2013, the band and Island Records officially announced that the band's four-year hiatus was over, and that Fall Out Boy was to return with a new album, titled Save Rock and Roll, with the lead single, "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)", and a headlining tour, released the same day as the announcement.[9][10] The band played a comeback show in Chicago that night. The band said of their reformation "When we were kids the only thing that got us through most days was music. It's why we started Fall Out Boy in the first place. This isn't a reunion because we never broke up. We needed to plug back in and make some music that matters to us."[11] Save Rock And Roll was originally scheduled for release on May 6 & 7 in order to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the band's first full-length album, Take This to Your Grave, but was pulled forward to April 15.

In March 2013, the band confirmed that Elton John and Courtney Love had contributed guest vocals on the album.[12]

Release and promotion

"My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)" was released as the lead single from Save Rock and Roll on February 4, 2013.[13] The single debuted highly on charts worldwide, debuting at #5 in the United Kingdom and at #36 on the Australian ARIA Chart, charts the band have previously received success from with singles like "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" and "Thnks fr th Mmrs". The song debuted at #26 on the Hot 100.

"The Phoenix" was released in the United States as the second single from Save Rock and Roll on March 24, 2013. An accompanying music video was released via the band's Vevo channel on the same day.[14]

Tour

On the same day as the announcement of the comeback and album, a 33-date Save Rock and Roll tour was announced for the United States and Canada, as well as intimate club shows.[10] An intimate show was played in Chicago on the same day, with two more in the US, three dates scheduled for Europe, two for Australia and one in New Zealand. Shortly afterwards, headlining performances at Skate and Surf, Summer Sonic and the Reading and Leeds festivals were announced.[15][16] On February 13, Fall Out Boy played "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)" for their first post-hiatus TV performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
