I am sympathetic to your situation. I believe you were baited into losing your cool at Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers#Scope creep playing out of their scope?. |
I've seen this tactic before. The result is the bait-ee: |
* loses credibility |
* may get sanctioned |
and the other guy gets out of the spotlight. |
Some people like to play the system this way. I have to consciously remind myself to stay calm or they win; this doesn't come easily to me. |
I'm not sure I can help other than to say I appreciate your work. |
Regards, |

== Your URLs == |
While I've strongly disagreed with you at ANI, I hope you'll take this on board. I looked specifically at this diff and notice two problems with the URL you provided. For both URLs, your URL has infoweb-newsbank-com.webproxy3.columbuslibrary.org as the website. If you don't know, the website is the part between https:// and the after /. |
Anyway what this means anyone clicking on the URL, or directly copying and pasting it or whatever is likely to end up on the Columbus Metropolitan Library website. This means even readers and editors with access to Newsbank will not be able to easily use the URL unless they also happen to have access to the Columbus Metropolitan Library's webproxy which probably means they need to be a full library member. |
While it's possible for a bot to fix this, I suspect for a variety of reasons it's considered risky to automate this generally. This means the bot will need to be specifically coded to fix URLs for the Columbus Library. So you really should try and fix these URLs yourself. A simple way is to remove the website "infoweb-newsbank-com.webproxy3.columbuslibrary.org" within the URL and replace it with "infoweb.newsbank.com". |

For the first URL, it's still not possible to access unless you have Newsbank access. However anyone with Newsbank access might be able to more easily access it now instead of needing to be a member of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. For the second URL, it should be possible now for anyone to access it since it seems to be an open URL. I can access it although I don't have Newsbank access. |
If you find this difficult, it is possible someone could help you out with a script which will automate it. It shouldn't be too difficult although it's not something I personally know how to do offhand. |
Alternatively, what happens when you visit this page . Do you see a page which says Library Name with a field to fill in and under that "Type in 4 letters (max) of your library name and then select from the list."? If you do, enter 'colu' into the library field, you should see 3 libraries with Columbus in their names. One of them is a Columbus county library which is probably not your own but I suggest you try it anyway. But the other two, public and public library might very well be your library. It's possible that you can login via this screen and if you do so, you might not have to use your libraries proxy to access Newsbank. This might enable you to automatically receive URLs that don't involve you libraries proxy. Note though that this is likely to mean that Newsbank can track everything you do tied to your library card (and IP) if they wanted to. |
Looking again at the first URL, a big problem is that it looks to me like the result of a search. This is something that has concerned editors a lot since such URLs may often die quite fast. Even if this didn't happen here, they tend to last a lot shorter than proper links to the resource. If you remember what you did to get the URL the first time around you should avoid doing that. Instead do whatever you did to get the second URL. You might already know this, but I still thought it worth mentioning just in case. |
Finally I noticed the second URL has a copy link button. Are you using this to obtain the URL? If you don't know that the copy link button looks like, it has this fairly standard icon (:File:Echo link-blue icon slanted.svg]] and is inbetween the download button and Google Classroom button and two to the left of the Page 202 of 209. If you're not using it you should try since this option is more likely to give you a good URL than something from your browser. |

:. Even getting publication, issue date, and title into your citations would probably make most of these recent issues go away. They'd really bullet proof your articles, and make it easier for NPPs to do their GNG/NCORP checks. At some point, you may want to take a look at and consider using Cite news, if you don't already. The visual editor may be the easiest way to fill this out. Hope this helps. –<span style="color:blue">Novem Linguae</span> <small>(talk)</small> 11:34, 29 August 2023 (UTC) |

:Just wanted to mention in case you don't know that a simple way to replace a lot of URLs would be to use a text editor with a find/search and replace function. Then find "infoweb-newsbank-com.webproxy3.columbuslibrary.org" (without the quotation marks) and replace with "infoweb.newsbank.com". For safety you could check each find result although it's very unlikely an article will have these and not require replacement. (In talk pages, there may be reasons, as here.) Most browsers do not have a find and replace function, so you will need to use a text editor and perhaps you'll find that doesn't work well with your work flow, hence why I suggest you could explore if someone could help you with a script. But it could be an alternative especially in the interim if you can't find a better solution. That is how I fixed the URLs here and it only took me a minute or two. Note also this doesn't fix the problem I highlighted above with your second URL, that it looks like it comes from a search result rather than a link to the resource. ::Nil Einne see my other comment. We should give both forms of links. These are articles about Columbus; their primary audience is people in Central Ohio. Currently CML library cardholders cannot use that general login page, nor is that aimed to be fixed. Please see this portion of the email chain where I tried to find out if this was possible (it's not): https://imgur.com/a/DF72c4s . :::Agree with you Ɱ re the likely audience, so it's preferable to have the links formatted in the way that helps most readers find access to the sources. Thanks to the AfD discussion I've gained access to Newsbank through a UK library but it's only helpful for the more recently dated articles in the Columbus Dispatch. The database available via the Columbus or Ohio library services looks to be much more comprehensive. The Columbus Dispatch only goes back to 1982 for my access and is nearly all in text format rather than images, shame but there we go. == Autopatrolled flag removed == |
Hi - I've revoked your Autopatrolled flag. Please don't take this as an insult - I really respect and admire the enormous contribution you've made to this project over many years. The fact is though that the flag's sole purpose is to allow articles to bypass the NPP queue if they are written by people with a proven track record of only putting articles in mainspace when they need no further review. If you're using bare URLs as sources, your articles need reviewing; the fact that those bare URLs are only accessible to subscribers of a particular library service makes it worse, but the main point is that those source templates should be fully filled-in before your articles hit mainspace. I want to emphasise that the removal of this flag will have no affect on your editing experience whatsoever; the only difference is that your new articles will go into a review queue. I'd be willing to reinstate the flag myself if you indicate that you will in future fill out source templates in full before putting an article in mainspace. Best wishes.
