Francis Burger Joint is a vegan burger bar with two locations in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The menu includes burgers, sandwiches, salads, fries, milkshakes, and a full-service bar.

Francis Burger Joint was named #19 in Yelp's "Top 100 Vegan Restaurants in the US 2024".[1][2] The restaurant received positive reviews from local food critics.[3]

History

[edit]

Francis began operating in 2021 as a food truck, serving burgers outside of the Minneapolis brewery Sociable Cider Werks.[4] The first brick-and-mortar location opened in January 2023 on Central Ave in the Northeast neighborhood,[4] and the second location opened on East Lake Street in November 2024.[2][5] The brick-and-mortar locations have been noted for their distinctive style, including black walls with red neon light highlights, and the lyrics of Winnipeg punk band Propagandhi painted on the walls.[3]

Francis Burger Joint is the Twin Cities' first fully-vegan bar. [6] Many liquors and beers contain animal-based fining agents, which can make drinking while observing strict veganism, vegetarianism, or kashrut difficult. Francis's bar options have included an "entirely vegan Negroni, a frosty root beer cocktail topped with whorls of tonka bean foam, and a Mezcal-based Ultima Palabra made with an egg white foam alternative". [7] While Francis Burger Joint's menu is fully vegan, it has made an effort to cater to omnivorous customers' tastes. [8][9]

The restaurant is named after Francis the pig, a pig who escaped from a slaughterhouse and became a local folk hero in Red Deer, Canada.[9]
