Welcome to my talk page.

This is John's talk page. The civility requirement of Wikipedia applies to ALL posting on my user talk page. Nasty, rude, angry, hostile, threatening, indecisive, juvenile chatter, and / or impolite comments, or postings by editors that I just plain do not like because they have NOT been nice will be ignored.

Today is February 6, 2015. My Yahoo Mail address is for contacting me by private email, since Facebook messages are NOT always 100% reliable. It exists for a reason. Feel free to use it.

Welcome back

[edit]

Hi John, may I ask why my user name is on your user page? Thanks and have a good day, --CrohnieGalTalk 20:49, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Yes, you may. It is not there now. I had copied the starting point for my user page in part from another user. -- John Gohde (talk) 23:59, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks, that's what I was thinking. My user page had helped another gather links and such when getting started. I was just curious. I hope it helped, please feel free to snag whatever you would like from there. I need them to refer to things because I forget easily so it makes things easier for me to have the list to remind me. Have a good day, happy and healthy editing, --CrohnieGalTalk 13:32, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Let's shake hands

[edit]

Hi John. I just want to check in with you and share some thoughts. While we obviously don't always agree on many things regarding alternative medicine, I want to reassure you that I do not have, and never have had, any intentions to improperly delete or downplay the existence of alternative medicine subjects at Wikipedia. They exist, and Wikipedia's job includes documenting the real world, including alternative medicine. You have done an amazing job at creating many things on the subject. I might not agree with some POV issues with some of them, but the basic idea of creating some of them is impressive.

The situation that occurred when you returned (related to the List of alternative medicine subjects which I started) was unfortunate. I'm sorry about that. I didn't even know that the list you had created - Index of topics in alternative medicine - existed, and I definitely had no intention of competing with it or with the Glossary of alternative medicine which you also started. The very fact that I created the list should indicate that I wasn't attempting to do any disservice to the subject, but was in fact making it more accessible to editors and readers. "Imitation is the greatest form of flattery" would apply, IF I had known about your original list. We both saw a need and were apparently thinking alike on that one! I hope we're okay and can edit together, and even when we disagree, that we can do it agreeably. -- Fyslee (talk) 03:21, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am inclined to believe that I was likewise correct on the areas in which we disagree on. It is fine with me. I would just like to see more favorable voting from you in the days to come. -- John Gohde (talk) 23:40, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reported violations of arbitration decisions for enforcement

[edit]

I have reported your actions at Orthomolecular psychiatry to WP:AE for enforcement. See this. ScienceApologist (talk) 14:53, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The improper notice and lack of discussion referenced by me, speaks for itself. And so does no other editor to date reversing my edit. -- John Gohde (talk) 17:50, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As a motion amending the above-named Arbitration case, the Arbitration committee has acknowledged long-term and persistent problems in the editing of articles related to pseudoscience. As a result, the Committee has enacted broad editing restrictions, described here and below.

  • Any uninvolved administrator may, on his or her own discretion, impose sanctions on any editor working in the area of conflict if, despite being warned, that editor repeatedly or seriously fails to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behavior, or any normal editorial process.
  • The sanctions imposed may include blocks of up to one year in length; bans from editing any page or set of pages within the area of conflict; bans on any editing related to the topic or its closely related topics; restrictions on reverts or other specified behaviors; or any other measures which the imposing administrator believes are reasonably necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of the project.
  • Prior to any sanctions being imposed, the editor in question shall be given a warning with a link to this decision; and, where appropriate, should be counseled on specific steps that he or she can take to improve his or her editing in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Discretionary sanctions imposed under the provisions of this decision may be appealed to the imposing administrator, the appropriate administrators' noticeboard (currently WP:AE), or the Committee.

These editing restrictions may be applied to any editor for cause, provided the editor has been previously informed of the case. This message is to so inform you. This message does not necessarily mean that your current editing has been deemed a problem; this is a template message crafted to make it easier to notify any user who has edited the topic of the existence of these sanctions.

Generally, the next step, if an administrator feels your conduct on pages in this topic area is disruptive, would be a warning, to be followed by the imposition of sanctions (although in cases of serious disruption, the warning may be omitted). Hopefully no such action will be necessary.

This notice is only effective if given by an administrator and logged here. PhilKnight (talk) 15:44, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

medicinal clay

[edit]

Hello, John,

You wrote here:

"Personally, I cannot say I am in favor of the use of Medicinal clay. Had a very negative experience with a dirt eater outside of Wikipedia. I have never used Medicinal clay and probably never will."

But have it ever occurred to you to use the clay externally? I'm not aware of any negative side-effects of that.

As to internal use, yes, some negative side-effects are possible, but generally because of excessive consumption.

Help with Core Synchronism redaction

[edit]

Greetings John--

I am writing to you appealing to your wisdom an experience in matters probably similar to this. What would you say is the best protocol for a response in a massive deletion and debunk of the Core Synchronism article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Souljerky (talkcontribs) 17:54, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template:NCCAM has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for discussion page. Bulwersator (talk) 17:46, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Template:Manipulative and body-based methods requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it must be substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{substituted}}</noinclude>).

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by visiting the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Famousdog (talk) 09:47, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If this template was already pre-existing on several different articles, then it is NOT an orphaned template. Nor, has it been deprecated. -- John Gohde (talk) 11:59, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

introduction

[edit]

Hi I am new to wikipedia editing and have just discovered these project groups. I am a biologist with an interest in alternative medicine. I see that this group is quite different from, say, the gastropod project... emotions don't seem to run so hot over there. Nonetheless, I would like to join this project because I believe I can make positive contributions.

My area of wiki expertise right now is the enlargement of stubs from the available research. I am dedicated to finding reliable sources of information and reporting it accurately.

I have an open mind when it comes to 'alternative medicine'. I do not accept anything blindly - I need evidence - but I do not reject new ideas out of hand as 'pseudoscience'. I believe in the scientific method but i also am suspicious of some aspects of modern medicine that seem to be controlled more by drug companies than health professionals.

On a personal level, I want to keep my body as healthy as possible using natural foods, and medicines where needed. I live a pretty 'alternative' life style in the Australian bush (solar powered home, composting, growing our own food) and have benefited from such alternative medical fields as chiropractic treatments, herbal medicines and massage. I realise that there are still snake oil salesmen out there but I also believe that many people who have been maligned as snake oil pushers are actually people who believe in their products or methods and deserve to have a voice.

Ok I don't want to go on too long but I want to know if you think there is a place for me here. Then, what is the procedure? do i just 'edit' the participant list in order to join? Is there a committee who vets new participants or do we just jump in, boots and all?

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
