Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Byzantine Greek στρώνω (strṓnō), a metaplasm of Koine Greek στρωννύω (strōnnúō) -thematicisation of Ancient Greek στρώννῡμι (strṓnnūmi), a variant form of στόρνυμι (stórnumi)- based on the past tense stem στρωσ- of ἔστρωσα (éstrōsa) -Modern έστρωσα (éstrosa)- in the pattern of φθάνω (phthánō) - ἔφθᾰσα (éphthasa)[1] and integration to the -ώνω (-óno) verb-system.[2] Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *sterh₃- (to spread, extend).
