From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *m-dziːtᴸ ~ m-tsiːtᴴ (to split), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *(d)ziːt ~ *(t)siːt (to split); cognate with Tibetan ཟེད (zed, broken off, damaged, injured). See also စုတ် (cut, to be torn), which seems to be allofamically related (STEDT).
