Problem

I just copied the example code and changed the number of columns ncols.
It seems there are some hard coded 4s in the code.

Suggested improvement

change 4 s in

matplotlib/galleries/examples/color/named_colors.py

Line 45 in 0b5940f

width = cell_width * 4 + 2 * margin

and

matplotlib/galleries/examples/color/named_colors.py

Line 52 in 0b5940f

ax.set_xlim(0, cell_width * 4)

to ncols
