This page hosts requests to stewards and global renamers for a username change across the entire Wikimedia network. Please read the instructions before posting a request.

This is also the page where the usurpation of inactive accounts can be requested.

Instructions

SUL finalization

If you are requesting a merge of a global account with one or more unconnected local accounts as part of finalizing your single unified login (SUL) username, please specify which wikis and accounts you want to merge into your global account. These accounts were typically named "account name~wikiname". Please note that we can only merge a local account into a global account when the global account has no edits on the same wiki as the local account.

Making a request for your own account

For changing your username on one wiki:

Please include the following information in your request:

  • the old username,
  • the new username,
  • please sign ~~~~ request with your account for a simple move (first section), or sign this request with both the originating and the target accounts if you are requesting a merge (second section).

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information. This helps ensure that you are requesting a rename for your own account. Please check before posting your request that the username you want is available. You can test that by going to the (new) user page and looking into the sidebar. If there is a link to user contributions, the account already exists, or check via Special:CentralAuth.

Private requests

Account renames are not private, once renamed many links from the old username to the new username will be permanently made. The reason submitted on the rename form (Special:GlobalRenameRequest) is private, and only visible by the renamers. Additional information that needs to be made in private may be sent using this direct wiki-email interface while logged-in.


Simple rename requests

If your rename request is simple and does not involve usurpation of an existing account or other SUL issues, you have two options:

  1. Use the request form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; or
  2. Submit the request below in this section.

Please use this tool to check if the username is taken before filing a request.

On Turkish Wikipedia, it isn't appropriate to use the names of religious persons and names such as God, Jehovah, Buddha and Allah that these names would be an attack for other people's beliefs. Also I think that usernames that generally only use god names (example:User:Allah, User:God; but such usernames don't exist.) aren't appropriate, according to our local username policy. Tengri means God in old Turkic (especially for Shamanism etc.). There is no attack directly here, but only using two god names together may cause trouble for other users. There is only one example what I can remember. tr:Special:Contributions/Tanrı Generally, as Turkish Wikipedia administrators, we don't block usernames that contain God, Allah etc. especially if they don't attack for other people's religious beliefs. @Vito Genovese:: Doesn't have many examples of such situations that I remember, could you help us? --Uncitoyentalk 05:22, 18 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Uncitoyen: I recall two further examples. The first one was Tanrilarinfisiltisi 'Whisper of the Gods', which was discussed here. Everyone agreed that it was fine. The second example was "Poseidonakafaatansatir" 'The cleaver that headbutted Poseidon', discussed here. I argued that the ancient Greek religion is still being actively followed by some and it has some official recognition as a minority religion, it could be considered offensive to some, albeit unlikely. Dr. Coal, a fellow admin, did not agree and argued that we should not be too restrictive, so we left it there. In other words, no blocks for either of the two accounts.
As for this particular example, I would similarly argue that there are some people who worship Tengri, which would not have been offensive to me if I were an adherent of this religion but could be so for those who are. But others might disagree with me on this.

Thanks. Yes, usually, such names aren't blocked that they aren't offensive. I have been wondering if this username might be an attack to those who believe in Tengri as said above, but I'm not already sure that username is inapporiate. --Uncitoyentalk 09:53, 18 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
