See AN post on enwiki (permalink). This seems like pretty reasonable confusion on the user's part, and could be fixed by adding something like "(This information is not made public)" or "(Other users cannot see this unless you email them)" in the relevant part of Special:Homepage.

@KStoller-WMF @Trizek-WMF To me, this seems like a reasonable change/addition to email module that could clarify some confusion, demonstrated via the Admin's noticeboard enwiki post (that's quite easy for us to implement). Alternatively, we might want to implement T237312: Newcomer homepage: Anonymize email address shown in the Start module. What do you think?
Displaying the email address used to be a confirmation step so that newcomers add their email address, and hence get notifications in their inbox. The old designs are visible in T237312.
When the email has been confirmed, there is no actual need to show it. I think we should just remove it. T275155: Homepage: allow users to remove the startemail module from the homepage once their email is confirmed
Thank you for creating this task, @Tamzin!

I agree that this might be a better approach as well.
@Tamzin, does T275155 seem like an acceptable solution to this underlying issue?
@KStoller-WMF Hmm my only concern there, if we're thinking about the lowest common denominator, is that some users might think that the "X" is to remove their email from the account. I think the solution works in principle, though.
Thanks for the feedback, that's a valid point!
The Message notification that will appear as confirmation after the email module is dismissed would address this to some extent:
But perhaps we should consider other changes. I'll pass along your feedback to design. Thanks!
