Abstract
Climate change is vividly discussed on social media platforms. In this study, we analyse the central figures in the climate change discourse on Twitter. We identify the most mentioned people, brands and groups. We then evaluate how users tweet about them, regarding stances and co-mentions. Our results indicate that tweets about media outlets, institutions and companies are dominating the climate change debate on Twitter, and that their role in shaping the public perception of climate change should not be underestimated. Moreover, we can show that politicians receive much more user attention than other groups and that Joe Biden and Greta Thunberg are the most mentioned actors in the discourse. Our research provides new insights on the driving actors behind the climate change discussion. This can help further researchers to develop effective measures for climate change communication.
