RANGERS signed James Tavernier on a three-year-deal from English League One club Wigan in July 2015.

The 23-year-old joined Mark Warburton’s side primarily as a right-back but can also play in, and is comfortable in, several different positions across the back line.

Tavernier spent the second half of the 2014/15 season on loan at Bristol City, where he won League One. He made 12 appearances for the club, scoring three goals in the process and he was instrumental in their double swoop as The Robins won the league with 99 points and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy

Born in Bradford, he started his career with Leeds United as an academy player and he spent seven years at Elland road before he joined Newcastle United in 2008.

He signed pro with the Premier League club in 2009 and despite being a Magpies player until 2014, he only ever made two appearances for the first-team.

Newcastle chose to loan him out to six clubs during his time on Tyneside – Gateshead, Carlisle, Sheffield Wednesday, Milton Keynes Dons, Shrewsbury Town and Rotherham United.

At Rotherham he enjoyed his first major success as a senior player, making 27 appearances, scoring five goals and helping them to promotion to the Championship via the play-offs in the 2013/14 season.

He caught the eye of Wigan during that season with The Millers and Uwe Rosler snapped him up for an undisclosed fee to take him to the DW Stadium in June 2014.

He made seven apperances for the club before he moved to Bristol City in January for the remainder of the season.
