SPECIAL FEATURE

PAGE 109  - POSTED AUGUST 16, 2003

Welcome to the Blackout of 2003.

We were just out of Pennsylvania Station - New York City, making our way up the approach to Hell Gate when all of a sudden we heard that infamous "thump" and our entire train lost power. As we drifted upgrade towards the bridge, our Engineer, Feddy Higgins called the "Section A" Train Dispatcher to tell him that we had lost all power.  We had a feeling it was more than a railroad related problem because the signals all went dark and a short time after that we saw people throughout  Queens coming out of their homes wandering in the streets.

The whole city of New York and much of the East Coast went dark due to a massive power outage.

Needless to say, it was quite a night. We sat on top of the Hell Gate with a birds eye view of a dark Manhattan.

9pm. A view of Manhattan from the Hell Gate Bridge.

An hour after the blackout  began, Engineer Freddy Higgins poses in front of a disabled 2166.

Another view.
I took this photo while we inspected the shafts to see if there might be a way to get the people out if this ended up being a major crisis.

Assistant Conductor Johnny Rioux (that big stud) decides to take advantage of a cool breeze off the Hell Gate Channel.
Johnny did an awesome job. I was lucky to be working with one of the best crews going.  There was the potential for major trouble but the OBS and Operating Crew on this train came through big time.

Freddy, NYPD Officer Neal and Johnny pose in front of #2166 wile we wait for a rescue engine from Sunnyside.
